DUBAI (Reuters) - A purported statement from a group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi threatened attacks on Japan unless it withdrew its troops from Iraq (news - web sites), but a later Internet message on Tuesday disowned the warning.
The earlier message from Zarqawi, an Islamic militant with suspected ties to al Qaeda, said Japan should follow the Philippines' lead and pull its troops out.
The warning coincided with the release in Iraq of a Filipino truck driver a day after Manila withdrew its small contingent of troops a month early in response to demands from kidnappers who had threatened to behead him.
"This message is directed to the Japanese government. Do what the Philippines has done because no one else can help you ... Your fate will be like that of the Americans and others," read the statement posted on an Islamist Web site, which said it was from Zarqawi's Tawhid and Jihad group.
