Kerry Shatters Quarterly Presidential Fundraising Record with $99.2 Million; Tops Bush in Fundraising for Fourth Straight Month

7/20/2004 5:23:00 PM

To: National Desk
Contact: Michael Meehan of Kerry-Edwards Campaign, 202-464-2800

WASHINGTON, July 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Kerry Edwards campaign announced today that it has raised $36.5 million in the month of June, $99.2 in the second quarter, over $160 million in 2004 and $185 million for the entire primary campaign. It is the fourth consecutive month that Kerry dramatically outraised Bush and the fourth month that it has topped $30 million.

The Kerry campaign raised $99.2 million for the second quarter of 2004, setting a record for any presidential campaign ever.

"With an average grassroots donation under $100 in June, our campaign continues to build great energy from average Americans," said Mary Beth Cahill, Kerry-Edwards campaign manager. "Two- thirds of all the money raised by John Kerry has come from 750,000 contributors."

1. Key question: how much has he spent?
Didn't Smirk already spend $160 million? Is Kerry going to hold out and launch an all-out blitz in Sept-Oct?

And I'll bet that every single one of them votes in November. Any figures on the number of Bush contibutors?

4. He made the right call to refuse the primary matching funds
Had Edwards or Clark won the nomination (good men both) they would have been shackled by spending caps all the way up to the convention. Kerry is so far running a solid campaign for a challenger. I give him an A-.

6. I agree .
Only Kerry or Dean could have competed with Bush. I always supported Kerry but I am glad he opted out of matching funds or there's no way he could have competed with Bush.

tion. I think that I read that the campaign is planning a monumental blitz after the convention.

15. I think
I think the Kerry campaign can give the money to the national party for distribution to the Democratic Party to spend on House and Senate campaigns. The good thing is that even a little bit of money (say, $250,000) can turn any number of races competitive, and in this election year, I think the Democratic base is highly motivated.

We could see some major Kerry coattails.

12. Looks like the money primary is a wash
And I don't think that's what Unka Karl had in mind. Stupidhead's $200 million war chest was supposed to scare all challengers and pave the way to victory. Miscalculation. Hundreds of thousands of people are voting with their wallets to turn George W. Bush into a one term former president. Just like dear old dad.

14. I can't believe that after 4 years of Bush, the non-super wealthy are...
...out-raising the super wealthy.

It makes sense. But I didn't think it would happen.

Now it'd be great if we could get rid of corporate PACs so that we'd have political power commensurate with our greater power to outraise Republicans.

19. We have them outnumbered
"I can't believe that after 4 years of Bush, the non-super wealthy are.....out-raising the super wealthy."

There are a lot more of us, one of the fears the GOP has always had is the fear that working people united can rule America. The GOP always works to keep the working people fighting between different groups within that class, young against old, white against black, union against non union etc. - the GOP knows that once united, the working people can control American politics. The GOP is quick to attack any gathering of the masses as "class warfare" because they know that if there ever is "class warfare" we will win because of our current electorial process. Perhaps our time has finally come, perhaps the people of the working class will put asside our petty differences and place the future of America first. I would love to see it happen in my lifetime.

26. I wonder how much the internet has influenced fundraising among the non-
super wealthy?

I wonder if Bush's extreme crappiness is a bigger, equal or lesser influence than the internet.

32. For me, both.
The internet allows 'impulse donations'. So Bush does something extremely crappy and I impulsively give money to Kerry. Fast, easy and the money is gone b/f I have a chance to overthink it.

Also, I give small donations as gifts for my dem friends and family, along with a card that says something like, I know what you really wanted for your birthday was a new president, so I gave to Kerry 2004 in your name. The feedback has been positive.

Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 09:27 AM by charlie105
nothing will. If the enthusiasm for people to give money is this great, can you imagine the will to vote. I don't care what the polls say, I strongly believe that Kerry will win by a huge margin. I can just feel it.

21. The Bushistas know they're in deep trouble
That's why Stupidhead's rattling his little saber over Iran and the RNC is trying to make a big deal out of Sandy Berger and what he did eight months ago.

But they dare not show any sign of weakness or uncertitude, because their entire administration has been cobbled together on the shaky foundation of the projection of being entitled.

". . . and great was the fall thereof." Stupidhead's favorite philosopher, describing the demise of a house built on shifting sands.

23. I hope it means something
But we're still months away from the election and Bandar Bush can make some big donations. From here on in my money goes to moveon.org. It's time to go negative on Bush.

Back in the primaries when we were sticking it to Bush we had a 12 point lead and we'll need all of that overcome the turnout that the churches will produce.

Where's James Carville when we need him ?

28. Hoorah!
Democrats are united. I, for one, didn't know much about Kerry at the beginning, but the more I learn, the better I get to know his policies and his character, the more I like him. I believe that most Americans have come to like Bush less as they have gotten to know him.

29. HA. Funny how the neo-cons forgot how much money...
Dems have and what it might be worth to us to show these mothercheneyers the door. Remember last year and the beginning of this year? All the sturm und drang about Bush's fundraising juggernaut seems to have been for... naught.

Well - maybe not completely for nothing. It did light a fire under me and many others, so that we were motivated to contribute early and as much as we could afford.

Every day this campaign goes on, the stronger my feeling is that we can take these clowns.
