Halliburton's Work in Iran Stirs Democrats
Halliburton's Work in Iran Stirs Democrats

By Robert O'Harrow Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 21, 2004; Page E01

Democrats who have been hammering away at Halliburton Co. and its former chief executive Dick Cheney about the company's work in Iraq yesterday added Iran to their list of complaints.

In a telephone press conference, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) said he found it "unconscionable" that a Halliburton subsidiary appeared to be doing business with a country tied to terrorist activities at a time Cheney was Halliburton's chief executive.

The press conference, organized by the presidential campaign of Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), came one day after Halliburton disclosed that a federal prosecutor had subpoenaed documents as part of an investigation of whether a Halliburton subsidiary violated anti-terror sanctions on Iran. "This is such an outrageous bit of news," Lautenberg said.

In a filing with federal regulators Monday, Halliburton disclosed that the three-year-old investigation had escalated from an inquiry by the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control to a criminal investigation by the Justice Department.

Such cases are referred to Justice only when there is evidence "intentional or willful" violations have occurred, government officials said.

6. The Democrats are shocked - shocked! - that this happened!
Where have you been, guys?

Halliburton's work habits were there for all to see, since before the 2000 election was a glint in Cheney's eye.

If ordinary Americans such as myself knew this along, how come you senators and congressmen were totally in the dark?

7. fact is
Halliburton and Cheney did do business with Iran. They don't deny it. Even if legal, it is yet another notch against Cheney.

Here's a UPI report from 2001 about the Iraq vs Iran thing - perhaps good for right-wing family members: http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/6/24/80648.shtml

12. Newsmax...interesting though..
Look who's Cheney's counselor...

"If he "was ever in a conversation or meeting where there was a question of pursuing a project with someone in Iraq, he said, 'No,' " Mary Matalin, Cheney's counselor, said."

"In a joint venture, he would not have reviewed all their existing contracts," Matalin told the Post. "The nature of those joint ventures was that they had a separate governing structure, so he had no control over them."

11. Sen Lautenberg held Senate hearings on this 5 months ago- on CSPAN
but it got zero traction and virtually no media coverage whatsoever because it was strictly Democrats conducting the hearing. In the hearing he explained how the Cayman Islands 'unit' was a phony setup- just a mailing address but with no physical office or personnel at all and the dealings with Iran were really conducted through Halliburton's Texas office.

Lautenberg also pointed out that Cheney had lied about his deferred payments from Halliburton. At the same hearing former Halliburton employees testified about the outrageous cost overruns and wasteful spending going on by Halliburton in Iraq. Sen. Lautenberg talked about how unpatriotic the war profiteering was and how in the time of FDR it would not be tolerated. He was very frustrated that he could not get the Repubs to look into the improprieties/illegalities and take any action.
