Michael Moore called 'ugly American' for criticizing Australia's premier

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Australia's treasurer called U.S. filmmaker Michael Moore an "ugly American" Wednesday because of Moore's remark that he hopes Australians throw out their prime minister for sending troops to Iraq (news - web sites).

"Mike Moore is entitled to his opinion but that's the quintessential ugly American, sitting down attacking the Australian prime minister," Treasurer Peter Costello, the government's second-most senior official, told Australian television's Nine Network. "I don't think anybody in Australia would take that seriously."

In a television interview broadcast here on Sunday, Moore criticized Prime Minister John Howard's decision to send troops to Iraq.

"Personally, though I have no say in any of this because I'm not an Australian, I hope the Australian people throw Mr. Howard and his people out of office for participating in this," Moore said. Elections are due in Australia before the end of the year.

Moore's film hasn't even opened here yet, but already it's sold out
as far ahead as tickets are being sold. Seems like a lot of people
want to hear his message.

And truth is that no-one would rather see Howard booted out than
Peter Costello, 'cause he wants Howard's job. And will probably
get it.

intervening and meddling in Australian domestic affairs? Tom Schiffer must also surely come under this category. And for that matter so must George W Bush. At least Moore is expressing his views in a private capacity whereas Bush and Armitage were expressing them in a official capacity

Moore has something you don't, Mr Costello -ticker and courage. If you had any of the two above characteristics, trust me you would be Prime Minister by now. The fact that you are not speaks volumes about your weakness and flaws as a politician
