US turns down Centre’s plea for Anderson extradition (Bhopal tragedy)

NEW DELHI, JULY 20: The US has rejected the Centre’s request for the extradition of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson in connection with the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Confirming that the US Government had decided to reject India’s request, an official spokesperson for the US Embassy said: ‘‘The decision came sometime in June and the Department of Justice which examined the particular case took the decision’’.

Last year, a Bhopal court had pulled up the CBI for diluting the case against Anderson and ruled that he must face charges of culpable homicide under relevant IPC sections.
