Group to fight 'present danger'

A bipartisan group of former government and congressional leaders, defense experts and business executives is reviving a Cold War relic to fight the war on terrorism — the Committee on the Present Danger.
The organization will wage a "war of ideas" against al Qaeda and Islamist terrorists, said its chairman, R. James Woolsey, a former CIA director.

Such a committee has been assembled twice, in 1950 against the threat of Soviet communism and in 1976 by Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson, Washington Democrat, in support of defense spending and in opposition to the Soviet expansion. The 1976 committee was dismantled after the Soviet Union dissolved and communism was no longer a threat.
Although elected politicians or candidates are excluded from membership, Sens. Jon Kyl, Arizona Republican, and Joe Lieberman, Connecticut Democrat, will act as honorary co-chairmen

Mr. Lieberman called the committee a "a bipartisan citizens' army" and said it sends a "clear signal that their strategy to deceive, demoralize and divide America will not succeed."

Cold warriors return for war on terrorism

10. The managing director, Hannaford, lobbied for Jorg Haider

PS. The managing director of this - uh - effort, Peter Hannaford, has been lobbying for some of the world's nasties, I noticed in some recent reporting. Including for Austria's Nazi-nostalgic Jorg Haider and the Austrian Freedom Party, and some African dictators, too. I guess it all depends on how you define "present danger." Groups which track anti-semitism had pretty grave things to say about Haider and the Austrian Freedom Party back in 1997 when Hannaford was a paid lobbyist for the party, according to Justice Department records.
