Pentagon overshoots war budget by $17 billion

The United States Pentagon faces a $17 billion shortfall for the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and its worldwide effort against (of) terrorism, congressional auditors estimated today.

The amount is triple what General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, projected in April he would need to make it through September. Lawmakers of both parties said at the time that his projection seemed too low, so the projection was not a surprise.

The election-season report immediately roiled the political waters. Democrats used it to criticise President (sic) George W Bush for underestimating the burden the wars - especially in Iraq - have thrust on taxpayers.
