CAMPAIGN 2004

Poll: GOP Senate race lacks voters' attention

According to a survey of likely Republican voters, 44 percent of Florida Republicans are undecided in the U.S. Senate race, with only 41 days to go before the primary.

TALLAHASSEE - Overshadowed by the campaigns for the White House, Florida's Republican U.S. Senate race is awash with candidates, millions of dollars and is among the most hotly contested races in the nation because it could help tip the balance of power in Washington.

But, with only 41 days to go before the Aug. 31 primary, Florida Republicans are barely tuning in, according to a survey of likely Republican voters.

An overwhelming number -- 44 percent -- remain undecided, according to Atlanta-based InsiderAdvantage's poll of 300 likely Republican voters statewide. It's the first recent statewide survey of the Republican race unconnected to any of the candidates.

Former congressman Bill McCollum leads with 19 percent support. Former U.S. housing secretary Mel Martinez is next with 14 percent, and Coral Gables millionaire Doug Gallagher is in third place with 11 percent -- results that track recent surveys conducted by some of the campaigns and the Florida Medical Association. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus six percentage points.

primary among the democrats, I think the dems will be in a stronger position going into the GE.

I predict that if dems keep Graham's seat, Kerry will also win the states EV's...and with that the election. Of course if Jeb and the GOP are going to try to keep the state from going to Kerry, they are just as likely to not let the dems keep the senate seat.

I know Kerry's already got the legal team ready in case of anything. I hope the entire party is.

2. One or two elections would fix all this.
These states need someone who will brake the two party hold on rules and get the elections open to lots of people and I am willing to bet the non-voters will start to vote and change things. Well any how someone should start voting. We are down near 50 percent and half are GOP and Half Dem. If that is true it is just bad for all of us.
