Mass layoffs rise in June

Mass layoffs picked up across the Buckeye State in June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.


Ohio employers initiated 61 mass layoff actions last month, resulting in 6,755 initial claims for unemployment benefits. Employers initiated 38 mass layoffs in May, which accounted for 3,305 initial claims for unemployment.

June's totals were better than those observed in June 2003, when Ohio employers initiated 72 mass layoffs resulting in 8,361 initial claims for unemployment.

Nationwide, U.S. employers cut 134,588 jobs in 1,379 mass layoffs, compared with May's total of 87,501 initial claims for unemployment from 988 mass layoffs. In June of 2003, U.S. employers took 1,691 mass layoff actions, resulting in 157,552 initial claims for unemployment.

I recall at the beginning of Bush's term, suddenly it cost too much to publish mass layoff data.
