U.S. Congress Votes to Declare Genocide in Sudan
Thu Jul 22, 2004 10:45 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Congress passed a resolution on Thursday declaring that genocide is occurring in Sudan, which backers hope will pressure the international community to take action to protect Africans in the Darfur region from marauding Arab militias.

In a rare show of bipartisan agreement, the House of Representatives passed the measure in a unanimous vote, and the Senate then approved it by a voice vote, in their last acts before Congress adjourned for a six-week summer recess.

The resolution says "the atrocities unfolding in Darfur, Sudan, are genocide."

With those precision weapons that sniffs out the oil and spares it...
Hey, evil regimes gotta go, People want "Democracy", even if it's delivered in a gunboat, right?

5. What are you talking about?
Nothing in the Sudan has anything to do with democracy or wanting it.

Democracy is not the issue here.

7. Which is why we won't do Jack Shit.
It's a horrible situation, but Sudan is not part of the PNAC Master Plan, thus ShrubCo's not interested.

9. What should we do?
Sanctions? They didn't work well in Iraq.

Invasion? Not hardly.

10. I don't know. I'm more unqualified than Condi to give that advice.
Aid? Money? Send Jimmy and Jesse?
Don't ask BushCo, either. All they know is drop bombs and pull down statues.

2. I didn't know Congress had the power to declare genocide
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 11:08 PM by thebigidea
By the power vested in me by the kingdom of cookieville, I declare GENOCIDE!

Because as we all know, it doesn't happen unless Hastert thinks it does.

Are they sure they don't want to call it abuse? Lightly grilled killing? Mild life misplacement?

6. What a striking juxtaposition.
Well dressed, self important people agreeing that, yes, atrocities are indeed atrocities and they are happening right now, this minute. Meeting adjourned.

It seems so little yet I commend them because I'd grown not to even expect this much.

11. When do they "declare" genocide in Iraq?
I think the people of Iraq have already made such a "declaration"--those not wiped out already, that is.
