Army to send 8,800 soldiers to Texas
Army to send 8,800 soldiers to Texas
By Liz Austin / Associated Press
July 23, 2004

The Army has decided to move 8,800 troops to Texas by 2006, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced Thursday.

About 5,000 troops will go to Fort Hood in Central Texas in 2005 and 3,800 troops will go to Fort Bliss near El Paso in 2006, the Republican senator said.

''This is great news for our national security. This is great news for taxpayers. And this is a strong vote of confidence in Texas,'' Hutchison said.

It was not immediately clear where the troops would be coming from. An Army spokesman declined to comment, saying details would be discussed in a Friday news conference at the Pentagon.

1. Are these preludes to the draft?
"Texas has a lot of natural assets that make us a very desirable place for additional troops,'' Cornyn said. ''We have a lot of wide open spaces, we have communities that are very supportive of the military and we have the kind of weather that allows year-round training. We've got it all."

3. Troops will be moved from states that vote Dem
probably. The idea is that having a military base in an area improves the economy. So Shrub will shut down bases in areas where he is not loved and worshipped.

14. Funny you should say that-
Have been speculating among family that the Bushies might be able to threaten to use base realignment as a stick here in NC. Think of it as a warning rattle. It may or may not work with the general populace, but would certainly get the attention of State officials who should be out stumping for Kerry/Edwards.

11. hell, probably 20% of all recruits are from here, anyway.

Saves on transportation. Too bad they sold that base a couple years ago for NOTHIN'. Guess Halliburtons gonna have to do some fast-track, time & material room-additions.
