Iraqi General Assassinated by Gunmen in Mosul

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Gunmen assassinated a senior member of Iraq (news - web sites)'s fledgling armed forces as he traveled to Friday prayers in the northern city of Mosul, police said.

Brigadier General Salim Blaish and one of his neighbors who was traveling with him were killed by gunmen in a drive-by shooting.

2. Not to downplay this killing, but...

...aren't there thousands of generals in Iraq? I mean, I know that under the Ba'athists, generals were all over the place.

According to the article:

5. Yeah, but when people start getting killed for helping the government...

others are less inclined to help. One killing can deter hundreds of others.
