Plagued by poor clothing sales, Sears, Roebuck and Co.'s second-quarter profits were about a third less than what Wall Street expected, and the nation's biggest department store chain warned of a bleaker outlook for the rest of the year.

It wasn't good news for Sears' employees, either.

Under pressure to prove it can perform as a pure retailer since last year's sale of its profitable credit business, Sears announced Thursday that about 3,300 jobs, or 1.6 percent of its U.S. workforce, are in the process of being eliminated this year. That includes layoffs of nearly 200 workers at its Hoffman Estates headquarters.

Of the 3,300 jobs being shed, about 3,000 are support workers performing administrative and back-office tasks in the field. Sears declined to say how many of those jobs are from the Chicago area. Another 340 headquarters positions were eliminated, of which half were unfilled jobs.

3. That's a lot of back-office jobs - wonder if they'll be out-sourcing or
if they were just that heavy in the support areas.

4. The idiots at Sears basically fired *all* of their longest-employed floor

salespeople, last year. These folks, each and everyone of them, were replaced by inexperienced salespeople and managers whom, since they hadn't been around for so long, weren't asking for as much pay.

The Sears CEO did this to save money. They blew a huge hole in their foot, imho.

5. I Worked For A Small Manufacturer Foe A Short While - The President Of
that company fired all of his ales people one year because some of them made more on commission than his salary.

The following year the company took a 50 % drop in sales as the old sales force cannibalized the customer base.

The company laid off nearly 40 % of its manufacturing labor and some staff to survive.

Some people are too stupid for their own good.
