Norwegian news (web) site banned in Dubai

VG Nett has been blocked because its content is «inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political, and moral values of the United Arab Emirates.»

One of TV 2 Nettavisen’s readers in Dubai informed us that it is impossible to read the web edition of the Norwegian paper VG in the United Arab Emirates.


This is the message that appears when readers in Saudi Arabia try to enter the website of the Norwegian paper vg.no

The exact reason why VG Nett has been blocked is not known, but the following text apologize of the incon-convenience: “We apologise this site you are attempting to visit has been blocked due to its content being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political, and moral values of the United Arab Emirates.»

TV 2 Nettavisen has not managed to obtain contact with the Norwegian embassy in Dubai, and the representatives for the United Arab Emirates in Germany have never heard of the problem.



Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates surveillance and registers which computer terminals that search on what websites and for how long, and with the aid of special programs. It is a well established practice to block sites they do not deem as «appropriate».
