Bush Tells Blacks, 'I'm Here to Ask for Your Vote'
Every time I've been mugged, the mugger "asked" me for my money before stealing it from me.

http://www.reuters.com/printerFriendlyPopup.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=5760235

DETROIT (Reuters) - President Bush told African Americans on Friday he wanted their vote and acknowledged his Republican Party had "a lot of work to do" to win the support of blacks, who rejected Bush in 2000 by a margin of more than 9 to 1.

Two weeks after he rebuffed an invitation to speak at a gathering of the nation's oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP, Bush struck a chord with some blacks when he urged them not to allow the Democratic Party to take their support for granted in the November presidential election.

But he appeared to face a tougher sell when he asked members of National Urban League, a group focused on civil rights and economic issues affecting blacks, to consider whether his policies might better serve their interests than those of the Democratic Party.

"I'm here to ask for your vote," he told the attendees, who numbered about 1,200. "I know, I know, I know," he said, when the blunt appeal appeared to catch many off guard.

1. Tsk tsk tsk...a bit late
Hey Bush, if you really wanted their votes, why did you reject the NAACP invitation? Oh yeah, while were at it, why is your administration spending millions in taxpayer dollars to PREVENT the payments due to black farmers?

2. I heard it at lunch.
OxyMan played it while I was on the way to the library.

He hyped the fact that there was a lot of applause from the audience at that line... which is true...

But he seemed to ignore the much louder noise...

Which was laughter.

It's all about whether any of these people have enough money to pay bribes to the WH. That is the only thing that matters.

6. Bush perpetuates institutionalized racism
"yall don't mind if we Feds paid farm subsidies to white farmers but not black farmers ever since the New Deal, do you?

So the lawsuit which ruled the Feds have to pay you back for the institutionalized racism, you can just let the past be the past, right?"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=103&topic_id=63826#64153

Bush screwed the black farmers out of their lawsuit. Take this report to the "Christian Values" preachers he's courting and it's all over for him.

24. Maybe I've been reading too much Daily Howler
"Bush struck a chord with some blacks when he urged them not to allow the Democratic Party to take their support for granted in the November presidential election."

How can this reporter know that Bush "struck a chord" with this remark? Did he interview someone/anyone? Or is this the typical media mind-read in evidence?

27. Blacks like everyone else vote their pocket books
Gore got 9 out of 10 black votes because of the record low unemployment rate under Clinton-Gore.

Clinton implemented low-income workers tax credit (negative income tax)and raised the minimum wage.

Accordingly, the crime rate in many black communities fell.

Clinton-Gore administration also appointed a record number of blacks.
I remember reading about it in Jet magazine. Every year blacks in Clinton's adm. took a group picture in the oval office. But by 2000 the number was so large that it picture was taken in the Rose Garden.

Bush has Condi and Colin both of which had higher status/ credibility prior to working for Bush.

When Bush went to Africa (July 2003) he was not greeted as Clinton was greeted. I recall a cartoon of the South African President showing Bush the splendors of that country. The caption had the South African President saying to Bush: "No you can't have it."

I believe that Bush went to Urban League to help blunt to criticism that the Republican party lacks diversity.

30. If Bush cares about people of color..
.. then WHY isn't he lifting a finger to stop the genocide in Sudan?? He shows no compassion for people of color, regardless of their citzienship, why should anyone believe he cares particularly?? It is now estimated that 300,000 people will die there.. and he does what exactly? Goes on another vacation in Texas. Shame on him.

31. BWAAAAAA-HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
He's not asking. He's begging.

My friends, this campaign is in serious trouble. First Bush suddenly wants to be the "peace president." Now he's courting the African-American vote? After what happened in Florida in 2000?

This isn't strategy. This is what they call "flailing."

There's only one sensible response to Bush's "asking" for the African-American vote: CRAWL FOR IT!

Yeesh,

The Plaid Adder

It's an interesting thought - someone should have asked, "You want us to vote for you, but does our vote count?"
