Treasury Secretary Experienced Job Loss

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's chief economics spokesman speaks from experience when he says he knows what it is like to lose a job. Treasury Secretary John Snow has lost three of them.

The first layoff occurred in the 1960s in Ohio where Snow, just out of college, was working as a salesman at a photo store. The business laid off several employees, including Snow, as part of a restructuring.

The second layoff occurred in the early 1970s after Snow had graduated from law school and was working as a lawyer at a Washington, D.C. firm that decided to let him go.

The third layoff had political overtones. Snow was an official at the Transportation Department during the Ford administration. When Jimmy Carter defeated Ford in the 1976 presidential race, all of the political appointees, including Snow, lost their jobs in the change of administrations.

Snow, who rose to be chairman of CSX Corp. during a 20-year career at the railroad giant, often refers to his experiences in being laid off when he describes how hard the administration is working to bolster economic growth and create more jobs.
