Emotions run high as Bush visits Detroit.

snip-

Passions surged and tempers occasionally flared as opponents and backers of President Bush gathered Friday for his visit to the city.

-snip

snip-

Of the approximately 200 people who began demonstrating an hour before the president arrived to speak to the National Urban League, the anti-Bush demonstrators had a slight advantage in numbers and made considerably more noise.

-snip

slight advantage my butt. The radio news broadcasts are painting it as slightly different. But protests just the same.

And...on edit: The radio reports are putting it in the hundreds, not 200. Hope our news prints more of this.

Note:Freep stands for Free Press, not freeper.

Speech comes as a new poll shows overwhelming support for Kerry among blacks
By Natalie Y. Moore / The Detroit News\

<snip>
Rep. John Pappageorge, of Troy, said the GOP would fare poorly in this year's elections if it failed to "suppress the Detroit vote." This week he said he had used "a bad choice of words" but said his comment shouldn't be construed as racist. He apologized "if I have given offense in any way to my colleagues in Detroit or anywhere."

Michigan Democratic Party Chair Melvin "Butch" Hollowell said he will ask U.S. Atty. Jeff Collins for an FBI investigation of those comments. Hollowell, who attended Bush's address, said the president's message will not likely stick with blacks.
<snip>

Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' Local 58, carrying signs reading "Show us the jobs," came to the rally to protest Bush's economic record.

They're sending everything overseas," said Cheryl Fike, of Royal Oak. "They're trying to completely eliminate the middle class." Organizers estimated the crowd at betweeen 300 to 400 protestors.

And check out the cyber poll: "Which political party do you think will do more to benefit African-Americans?" It was 100% for Democrats when I peeked.

8. he's trying to undo the damage he do'ded
meanwhile.... <b>Bush acknowledged, "Listen, the Republican Party has got a lot of work to do. I understand that." </b>

from this snippet -- there seems to be more than just 'a lot' of work for GOPers to do

---snip----

A Republican state lawmaker in Michigan stoked those resentments this month when he said the GOP would fare poorly in this year's elections if it failed to "suppress the Detroit vote."

State Rep. John Pappageorge, of Troy, Mich., said this week he had used "a bad choice of words" but said his remark shouldn't be construed as racist. He apologized "if I have given offense in any way to my colleagues in Detroit or anywhere."

12. Saw Bush* address Urban League on CSPAN...
Gave a horrible, pandering speech. "I, uh, employ, uh, a lot of you all colored folks! Uh...." "Oh yeah, God is on my side." Smattering of applause from Bushistas planted near the microphones.
