California man claims he was jailed and beaten during stay in Egypt

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A California man who claims Egyptian authorities jailed him before he boarded a flight to the United States said he was beaten and questioned before finally being released nearly a week later without explanation.

Abdul Ghafoor Mahboob, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Culver City, claims he was detained July 16 and released Thursday with no explanation as to why he was held prisoner.

"Without my prayers, I would have gone crazy," Mahboob told the Los Angeles Times during a phone interview from London.

The 26-year-old of Afghan descent emigrated to the United States in 1988 and until last year worked as a fund-raiser for an Islamic relief organization, the Times reported Saturday.
