Iraq's PM Allawi Visits Beirut for Talks

BEIRUT, Lebanon -- Iraq's prime minister began a three-day visit to Lebanon on Sunday, seeking political, security and economic backing for his troubled nation.

Prime Minister Rafik Hariri greeted his Iraqi counterpart, Ayad Allawi, at Beirut International Airport. They met briefly then drove off to the prime minister's palace in Beirut, where Allawi will be staying during his visit. They did not speak to reporters.

The Iraqi prime minister, whose mother is Lebanese, was scheduled to meet Monday with Hariri, President Emile Lahoud, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.

Although Lebanon has no borders with Iraq, security was expected to be discussed extensively. Iraqi officials hope close security coordination with Arab nations can curb violence in Iraq, but Lebanese officials have made clear they are not considering sending troops.

Allawi's visit to Lebanon was widely criticized by the country's leftist and Islamic parties. They urged Lebanese officials not to receive him.
