Obama shines brightly on national stage
CBS' Schieffer: 'This guy is a rock star'

By David Mendell
Tribune staff reporter
Published July 25, 2004, 2:11 PM CDT

BOSTON -- U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama's ascending political star appeared to rise another 1,000 feet Sunday after the Illinois state senator stepped into the often blinding headlights of the Sunday morning talk circuit--and didn't get run over.

Besides the host of obligatory Illinois media interviews, Obama made the rounds of high-profile Sunday morning news shows that often can make or break a political candidate's career. If the early reviews were any indication, Obama's fast-moving career continues ahead at near blinding speed.

Obama, the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention here Tuesday night, appeared on NBC's Meet the Press with Tim Russert, CBS' Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer and Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer. Russert, in particular, put Obama to the test, asking a series of hardball questions designed to throw the intellectually nimble Obama off his game.

"This was sort of his 'welcome to the NBA' moment," said Obama's lead media consultant, David Axelrod, of the Meet the Press appearance. "I'm biased, but I thought he was unflappable."

1. great article..........
although, i don't live in illinois, i'll continue to support him for his bid to the us senate. i, for one, have no desire to see obama "burned at the stake" for his measured diplomatic responses to russert's obvious rnc-driven baiting on mtp.

i think he will be a wonderful addition, and a huge asset in the senate.

9. Why are there so many different takes on what the guy said? I saw the
first post and if I recall rightly, it said that Obama said that bush* probably felt that he went into Iraq for the right reasons and that he said that there were WMDs in Iraq. So I asked when he said it, and the answer was MTP with Russett. I read the transcript of the show and while it did say that he felt that bush* thinks that he went into Iraq for the right reasons, but he also said that he wouldn't have voted for the IWR. I didn't see anything about WMDs.

I don't watch MTP. Russett makes me physically upset. It's no different than reading a Robert Novak column. I don't watch Faux on Sunday's either. I do watch McLaughlin and Washington Week (or whatever it is called). So I sort of expect to get a synopsis of MTP and Fox here. My mistake.

Now someone please tell me, did I miss something? Was there mention of finding WMDs or there even being WMDs in Iraq? I can't find it. But then again, I could be missing something.

11. I saw the program and read that post
I heard Obama say that he was against the war and wouldn't have voted for it. Russert then tried to make a big deal out of the fact that both Kerry and Edwards voted for it. SO Russert drives me crazy...always trying to put a wedge between people.
I didn't get the idea that he thought Bush was right AT ALL

10.  Brilliant apparently isn't enough for some people here....
Obama must also be an in-your-face, foaming at the mouth leftist if he is to be considered any better than Zell Miller.

13. Has the right wing media ever asked a Republican a "hardball" question?
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 09:54 PM by Democat
No. Not unless the Republican speaks out against Bush or defends Kerry.
