Rock Royalty to Join Voices Against Bush With Fall Concerts
Musicians will perform in swing states to try to affect election. Playing for a cause is a tradition, but injecting political views can be risky.

By Geoff Boucher
Times Staff Writer

July 25, 2004

Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, R.E.M., Pearl Jam and a deep roster of other rock stars will unite for politically minded concerts this fall that will give voice to dissatisfaction with the Bush administration.

The all-star rock shows, which are expected to begin in October and target campaign swing states, are in the planning stage but were confirmed by half a dozen music industry sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Insiders disagree on the unifying rhythm of the celebrity coalition. Some say it is the promise of the John F. Kerry candidacy, but at least one emphasizes the fear of President Bush's reelection. "There is a range of feeling about Kerry," the source said, "but a uniform belief that Bush must go."

The tour turns up the volume of the rock scene's role in politics, but it is not the only example of an apparent surge of commentary among artists. Rockers seem virtually unanimous in their anti-Bush stance, just as country music has seen a wave of passionate patriotism and support for the president, exemplified by the songs of Toby Keith.

1. Speaking of Toby Keith
I saw an interview with him recently, and even he seemed to be moderating his views somewhat. Not that he's become a peacenik or anything, but I take that as a good sign.

7. You probably won't believe this. . . .
. . .but, at one time the Republican Party was the progressive party on a lot of social issues. Teddy Roosevelt was in fact in favor of some form of universal health care and retirement insurance(social security) as well as a number of other 'progressive' ideas long before they were even considered as real possibilities. It was really only after Goldwater that these 'Dixiecrats'racist and conservative, began calling themselves Republicans. Same assholes different name.

10. the parties have essentially flipped in the last hundred years
I would have probably voted for the Republicans a hundred years ago, but I would like to do a little research before committing to an answer.

13. Yup. The South saw Repubs as "party of Lincoln"
and were rabidly Dem in response.

That's why the few older Dems in my extended family are Dems and not Repubs like most of them, 'cuz they are still bitter about "The War Of Northern Aggression".

Embarrassing, but true.

14. Nixon supported civil rights legislation, and Ford was a moderate
There are still a few old school republicans around-William Weld, Olympia Snowe, etc.

8. Come to Oklahoma...

They're all over the place.

Dixiecrat is not an official term of course, but that's what the vast majority of our Democrats are. Look at states where the national delegation is mostly Republican while the local officials are primarily Democrats.

From the beginning of the 20th century onward, the KKK and repukes
were indistinguishable. All the repukes were KKK, this according to a doc. on the Klan by PBS.

18. FUTK, he's an even bigger pssy than I thought.
That's ugly I know, but it's true. War hawks his age can enlist, either put up or shut up. The time to moderate your views is not after 30,000 are dead, and over 900 soldiers, that you SAID you supported, lost their lives while the whole country was singing your jingoistic anthem.

We all knew this war was bogus, so why not this asshole. He could have read a book, but no, he gave all the redneck civilian hypocrites a theme song to sing fromt the safety of their lazy boy in their living room while our soldiers were blown to bits. The only honorable action in this whole war was what the Philipines just did.

I hope Toby chokes on his own vomit in a bathtub someday, that P.O.S..

11. At a rock concert, it will be rock artists
At a hip hop show, it will probably be a hip hop show. At a country show, country artists, etc.

I agree that it would be great if artists from all genres got involved, but we should not look a good thing in the mouth either - if rockers want to rock against Bush, good for them!
