France annuls first same-sex marriage
France annuls first same-sex marriage

A French court has annulled France's first gay marriage, setting a legal precedent for outlawing same-sex marriages that came down on the side of the conservative government.

The government had already declared the marriage invalid and suspended the mayor who conducted it on June 5 in the Bordeaux suburb of Begles. The court ruling was a blow for opposition politicians who want to make gay marriages legal.

<snip>

The marriage stirred controversy in France, where the law allows civil unions between homosexuals although gays say this puts them at a disadvantage in terms of tax, inheritance and adoption rights.

<snip>

Members of President Jacques Chirac's ruling conservative party, Roman Catholic church leaders and some opposition Socialists have said children need a mother and a father and that the issue was too serious to be discussed in a hurry.

11. I'm sorry but
this kind of generalization is the same as saying all Americans are war criminals...

I think you should acknowledge the difference between "Members of President Jacques Chirac's ruling conservative party, Roman Catholic church leaders and some opposition Socialists" and "the French".

As a matter of fact i think that "the French", as in most European countries, are almost evenly divided regarding this issue.

Nonetheless, nine(!) of the (western) EU countries are considering legalizing gay marriage and public opinion in favor is generally in the 60-70% range throughout most of western Europe.

I haven't been able to find the list of the nine, but Britain and Spain are two of them. (Zapatero getting a dressing down from the Pope over it led to the newspaper article mentioning the number as nine. The Britain story was in the papers around the time Massachusetts legalized.)

So maybe corraling the activists (like these fellows) is on the whole more of an attempt from inside the French government to smooth the waves. (I can't see France, or for that matter Germany, not part of the nine.) The way the operatives have to look at it, 65% support means it's a sure thing- just a matter of each country trying to minimize the bad behavior of its recidivistic fascist Right that accomplishes nothing except to diminish the country's standing.
