Boys Kill Homeless Man Out of Boredom
Updated: July 27, 2004 at 4:18 p.m.

OAKLAND (AP) -- Three teenagers told police that the fatal beating they gave to a homeless man in Oakland began out of boredom, according to the lead investigator on the case.

"Basically, they said they did this because they were bored and they didn't have anything to do," Oakland Homicide Sgt. Bruce Brock said. "It ended up that their fun was harassing this homeless guy, and things just escalated."

The trio of boys, two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old whose names were not released because of their ages, was arrested Friday in the death of Dalrus Joseph Brown, 55. Brown, who often stayed in a homeless encampment near an abandoned factory, was killed during the early morning of July 17 while he was sleeping, Brock said.

Although the attack on Brown was the worst in a string of recent assaults on Oakland's homeless, Brock said investigators did not have evidence suggesting the three teens were involved in other cases, which remain unsolved.

2. Rumsfeld, Feith, and Boykins would love these guys.
It's too bad they're too young to enlist. Perhaps the reich will try to get an exception.

4. Just goes to show how far we have to go with the children
Education, after school programs, quality of life...HOPE. All are down these days and kids have too much free time and too little motivation to do something productive.

5. Where's the 'family values' coalition?
Where's the outrage?

Where's the funding for after school programs...for education...for job training...ANYTHING that would make these little monsters respect themselves and respect others?

Guess they'll have to beat a Halliburton board member before THAT contract goes up for grabs.

6. Probably not their first offense
I'd be willing to bet that substantial resources had already been used on them, after other offenses. Who kills a man out of boredom as a first offense?

Sorry, but midnight basketball would not have stopped this. Having a father, Big Brother, or positive adult role model might have prevented it.

7. Big Brother is a great program
I had two when I was growing up. Those were really good guys! You are right, a positive male role model is important. However, that does not lessen the need to reprioritize the education and well-being of the youth. Our government response these days is to place responsibility in the home and in the church. However, as you observed, too many youth come from divided homes.

Working single parents in impoverished circumstances find it next to impossible to moderate their children. That leaves the church...and late night basketball. Any other ideas?

10. I had two Big Brothers, too.
Two of the best men I ever knew.

This kids need help, and I'm not sure what the answer is. The boogie men of 'predatory children' never went away.

I wouldn't have jumped to such a conclusion.

Been speaking to Bill Cosby, have you?

Maybe that bum shouldn't have stolen that cheese danish if he didn't want to get killed.

24. Oh, so children of single mothers are murderers waiting to happen?
:eyes: I don't think so.....what is it about single females raising children that so bothers some people? :eyes: Funny, don't children usually learn violence, if they learn it, from males( they are prone to being more aggressive that women) hmmm...... But, no, let's save innocent children from the malevolent influence of over worked and underappreciated females. :eyes:

Don't give single mothers a bad rap......

End of rant.

At some point somebody will blame this on video games and Hollywood. Once again those who should take the blame will go unmentioned.

13. hmm
Well it *WAS* in oakland which *IS* in the bay area which *IS* one of the most *LIBERAL* areas in the US.

So use the transitive property and somehow liberalism = beating to death homeless men

Although, they could reason that the homeless man did it to himself. He should've cleaned up and gotten a job.

</sarcasm>

Sigh.

16. Go ahead and flame me, but I think these kind are beyond help.

I believe that we have raised at least one generation of savages. Kids today grow up in front of the tube and they are subjected to thousands of murders before age ten, let alone as teens.

They learn from the tube that the best solution to their problems is violence. It's not a big step until they kill for fun. After all, to them boredom is a problem and violence is the solution.

But all this is just a reflection of our uncivil society. Even in politics its impossible to have a civil discussion because the right has turned politics into an excersize in hate.

I think this is all tied in to the paradym of competition that controls us today. Until we change the model to cooperation we will continue on the downhill slide to oblivion.

At 55 the man was only two years older than I. He may well have been a Viet Nam Vet. I hope they do hard time with some bitter cellmates.
