FRED LARUE, RUMOURED 'DEEP THROAT' OF NIXON ERA, DEAD AT 75
Fred LaRue, rumoured 'Deep Throat' of Nixon era, dead at 75
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Fred LaRue, a Watergate scandal figure and high-ranking official in the administration of the late president Richard Nixon who once was rumoured to be Deep Throat, has died of natural causes.

He was 75. His body was discovered Tuesday by a maid who entered his hotel room in Biloxi, Coroner Gary Hargrove said. The coroner said he believes LaRue died Saturday.

LaRue was known as the "bagman" who delivered payoffs to keep participants in the Watergate break-in quiet and served 4 1/2 months in federal prison for conspiracy to obstruct justice.

LaRue served as special assistant to John Mitchell, the former U.S. attorney general who later headed Nixon's re-election committee.

2. Didn't John Dean recently say that "Deep Throat" was ill
and wasn't it Dean who said that the identity of "Deep Throat" wouldn't be made known until after his/her demise?

27. Ford is very unlikely
At the time Woodward was interviewing Deep Throat, Ford was the House Republican leader and Spiro Agnew was Vice President. The story of Agnew's misdeeds were not public and there was no reason to believe that he would not remain Vice President. Ford couldn't have imagined in the Summer of 1972 that about two years later events would catapult him into the White House; he is the most accidental of accidental presidents.

In addition, Deep Throat was familiar with the White House and the Committee to Re-Elect the President. He was either an insider or an investigator. Ford was neither inside the White House/CREEP nor was he investigating Watergate. There is no reason to think he knew anything more than he read in the Washington Post.

5. I don't think the repubs will be willing to have a flagged drapped
casket on display for 7 days if he was. They don't like Watergate being thrown up in their faces. They don't want to be reminded or the country reminded, especially w/Plame scandal brewing. (imho)

8. Nope, Deep Throat was Fred Fielding
At least that's what the investigative reporting class concluded at the University of Illinois after 4 years of investigation. More about it here:

http://deepthroatuncovered.com/

Pat Buchanan was on their short list of 7 suspects toward the end, but he was eliminated.

Woodward, Bernstein & Bradlee could all say otherwise very easily.

15. Poppy was/is still DEEP THROAT

From my point of view Bush 41 is and was Deep Throat.

People keep looking at it from front to back - from the Nixon era to this one.

Look at it the other way, from today to the Nixon Era. If we think about Bush as the silent Godfather in this administration and follow it back to those times, 41 is our man.

I would not believe anything that Woodward said now. I believed his every word when his Watergate book came out. Woodward was telling us lies.

My gut feeling is that the Godfather of the Throat is still cutting our throats each day with his control of our government. Cheney is just the front man.

19. I don't actually know who deep throat is..
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 07:49 PM by Tellurian
but I do know that Poppy is the nexus of everything that is wrong with this country.. Poppy operated Reagan's presidency behind the scenes. He and Baker stood in the shadows manipulating and maneuvering Reagan's every move. Together, they orchestrated and carried out the Iran-Contra cover up. Powell's reward for a job well done was Poppy facilitating his fast forward promotion to General.

20. I think there may be a lot in what you say
and I never suspected all that of Poppy until shrub was elected. Ironic that shrub may be the means to destroying his father's legacy, such as it was. A lot of people thought of Poppy as a fairly ok president for a Republican.

Now I see him as the godfather of the crime family.

And eventually, someday when the Bushes are out of power, a lot more of the truth about the past three decades is going to come out of the shadows.

21. Poppy is very adept at using front men keeping himself far
removed from the action...He is one of the foremost CIA deep cover operatives on the planet. He's learned every covert technique in the CIA spy book. He's a fanatic about learning of new and innovative technologies to enhance spy ops. Wasn't it Poppy that pushed for the commission to build the new Stealth aircraft? Heck, I think he even had a hand in naming it..The man is a paranoid obsessive.

24. yes, I believe thats true..
I also believe Babs was a lush during her first few pregnancys. Bush is not only suffering from mental illness, he exhibits the pathology of alcohol fetal syndrome. I believe someone placed his IQ at between 88/90... He can tie his shoes and feed himself..

26. this would be convenient for poppy
...if somehow it were announced that deep throat was larue.

the reason we don't know dt's identity is that Woodward promised his identity would be secret until after his death.

that's one reason why i totally agree it's poppy. anyone else who's been seriously mentioned would probably be able to make fortune on the celebrity status and bask in the glory of national hero-dom. at least among us libruls.

wouldn't work for poppy, who as someone here said, is the master of deep cover. he's currently working on getting his FIFTH term as president (2 reagan terms, 1 poppy term, 1 W term so far).
