Illinois GOP frustrated that Jack Ryan lingers on official ballot

CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly five weeks after he announced he was dropping out of the race for the U.S. Senate because of a furor over his sex life, Republican Jack Ryan inexplicably remains on the ballot.
Ryan is not saying why, and neither are his aides. Although he has repeatedly and publicly promised to withdraw, he jokingly said during one of many national news appearances that he would reconsider if thousands of people showed up at his door and asked.

State Republican leaders are frustrated by both his failure to step aside and their inability to find a new candidate.

The GOP is still trying to recover from the indictment of former Gov. George Ryan in a corruption scandal and a disastrous 2002 election in which it lost almost every statewide office.

At the same time, a rosy glow surrounds the Democratic nominee for the Senate, Barack Obama. The state senator from Chicago delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night to rave reviews
