...is turning the other cheek when Pakistan continues selling nuclear technology to the highest bidder with impunity. Oh, that, and about a half-billion dollars in loans forgiven this year alone.

Such a deal...

They're listening to the rhetoric at the DNC and they're panicking, which is making them consider hauling out their Octorber surprise earlier than they'd planned.

147. This doesn't worry me as much as it used to
At the end of the day, people are going to continue dying in Iraq and Afghanitstan. The economy will continue to suck, and the GOP will continue to fail at solving any important problems.

I think people are beginning to cotton on to how little these so-called "HVT" characters matter.

17. remember "Pakistan for Bush: July Surprise?"
Meanwhile, an explosive new article has just come out in the new edition of The New Republic magazine called "Pakistan for Bush: July Surprise?" It charges that the Bush administration may be pressuring Pakistan to deliver a so-called "High Value Target" before November-ideally at the height of the Democratic National Convention at the end of this month. Such a move would surely eclipse John Kerry's moment in the national spotlight and could lessen the boost in the polls Kerry is expected to gain during the convention.

65. This is GREAT
We know they've had this Pakistan guy in their back pocket for a long time, they have others lurking somewhere, I'm sure. Maybe even Osama himself - though I have long suspected that he is dead and that's why it's been so important to build up the reputation of other Al Qaeda members in our eyes.

The thing is - they're both too early AND too late. They've been miscalculating for four years, why stop now? It's too late to change our minds about the mess Bush has made in Iraq. Kerry's numbers (and their own) have them in panic-world. More and more their "use terrorism" response to every situation wears thin with the American public. If they're going to it now, instead of saving it for later it's win-win for us.

I'm listening to CNN right now - they're covering the convention NOT the distraction.

An additional $2 million is being offered through a program developed and funded by the Airline Pilots Association and the Air Transport Association.

African embassy bombings

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan has arrested Ahmed Khalfan
Ghailani, a Tanzanian al-Qaida suspect with a $5 million reward on
his head in connection with the dual 1998 bombings at U.S.
embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the interior minister said Friday.

Ghailani was arrested on Sunday in the eastern city of Gujrat
along with at least 15 others, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh
Hayyat told Pakistan’s Geo television network.

Why would the Bushies spring it today if they got bin Laden a few days ago? Kerry isn't scheduled to make any groundbreaking speech tonight, so why not wait until the RNC, where it would give them the most boost, or at least wiat untli tomorrow, to completely sap the bounce from the DNC?

It doesn't make sense...

First, Kerry is supposed to make the most important speech of his career so far tonight. Second, if doing this today instead of tomorrow makes his speech -- already prepared -- not timely. IF this is OBL, of course.

900+ young Americans are dead, 6,000+ injured, and $250+ billion dollars wasted because of Bush and his lies about WMDs and Iraq. How many more Americans will come home in bodybags, and how many more tax dollars will be wasted, before Bush is impeached?

Cheney at the Helm

At Halliburton, oil and human rights did not mix

By Wayne Madsen

Dick Cheney, George W. Bush's running mate, is a far cry from the "aw, shucks" kind of Wyoming cowboy-politician painted by Republican strategists. When he was at the helm of the Dallas-based oil services giant Halliburton, Inc., from 1995 until his nomination, the company and its subsidiaries--Brown & Root and Dresser Industries--were deeply enmeshed in the military-intelligence complex.

After serving as Secretary of Defense in Bush the Elder's Administration and making Kuwait safe once again for U.S. oil companies, Cheney went around the country making speeches. But when the CEO spot opened up at Halliburton, the board of directors tapped him, knowing that his connections would come in handy. They just didn't know how handy.

For instance, after Halliburton acquired Dresser in 1998, it helped rebuild Iraq's petroleum industry, which Cheney and the Pentagon had decimated during Desert Storm.

During a 1998 speech in Corpus Christi, Texas, Cheney conceded that his top job at the Pentagon stood him in good stead at Halliburton. "In the oil and gas business, I deal with many of the same people," he told the convention of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies.

The Pakistani president said the arrested person is Tanzanian who is married to an Uzbek woman, and who is wanted by the United States," the station said.

Al Arabiya said the suspect may be Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian who is on the FBI (news - web sites)'s most wanted "terrorists" list for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings by al Qaeda of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Ghailani was among seven people about whom the United States said in May it was seeking information amid fears of a possible attack in the near future.

that Bush$Co has planned between now and the election.

They get their front page play, and if it turns out to be BS --- well that just gets lost on the back pages somewhere --- if it gets any play at all.

The media is Bush$Co's: bought and sold or just beaten down, but Bush$Co's, pure and simple.

I do suspect, however, that if Kerry manages to take office, that the media will suddenly discover their "independence" again. -- Gives us something to look forward to!

so it's not Usama. From the BBC:

"The Pakistani president said the arrested person is Tanzanian who is married to an Uzbek woman, and who is wanted by the United States," the Arabic television station al-Arabiya said, quoting President Pervez Musharraf.

Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani appears to match the description, as given on the FBI's most wanted list.

78. It only took them three years and a Iraqi war
to get him. If it is him.

How many other terror attack has he planned during that time?
How many people died while we were in Iraq fighting when we could have been after Osama?
How much money was thrown away in Iraq when it could have been better spent in Afghanistan?

I'm sorry, but there are far too many issues with BushCo than JUST Osama. I still think that the bump from a Osama capture will be about the same as the Saddam capture. Small and not lasting.

Bush is done in November.

it were, it could not reverse the damage that Chimpy has done to our country.

Chimpy's administration has been nothing short of a disgrace, and the American people are going to vote him out in November. It's very clear how much Americans crave change right now.

An Osama capture, while it would be good news for everyone, is far too late. It has been almost three years, and nobody even knows where the guy is.

Instead, Chimpy sent our sons and daughters traipsing to Iraq to get their limbs and heads blown off.

Pakistan has arrested Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian al-Qaeda suspect with a reward of up to $25m on his head in connection with the dual 1998 bombings at US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, the interior minister said on Friday. hailani was arrested on Sunday in the eastern city of Gujrat along with at least 15 others, Faisal Saleh Hayyat told Pakistan's Geo television network.

"He was arrested a few days ago in an operation by security agencies in Gujrat," Hayyat said. "He was among the foreigners arrested in that operation." Ghailani is under indictment in the United States for the bombings, which killed more than 200 people.

"As a result of our investigation, it became clear that he was a major figure wanted for the bombings," Hayyat said. He said Ghailani was in Pakistani custody, but indicated he might be turned over to US authorities after investigations are completed.

Ghailani also goes by the names "Foopie," "Fupi" and "Ahmed the Tanzanian." Pakistan had said earlier that some of the 16 suspects arrested Sunday were from Africa, but had not said whether they were linked to al-Qaeda. The suspects were captured by police and intelligence agents during a raid on a house in the Industrial city of Gujrat early on Sunday after a 12-hour shootout.

Edited on Thu Jul-29-04 03:36 PM by Jax
http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=556306§ion=news

"Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat identified the man as Ahmed Khalfan Ghailini and said he was a Tanzanian national wanted for the synchronised bombings that killed more than 200 people at the U.S. embassy in Kenya and 11 at the embassy in Tanzania.

"He carried head money of $25 million (14 million pounds)," Hayat told Reuters on Thursday.

He said Ghailani was one of about a dozen people arrested on Tuesday when security forces raided a suspected militant hideout in the city of Gujarat, about 175 km (110 miles) southeast of the capital Islamabad.

Ghailani is on the FBI's "Most Wanted Terrorists" list for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings, which also said it was "offering a reward of up to $25 million for information leading directly to the apprehension or conviction of Ahmed Ghailani".

US writes off $500 mn Pak debt
K J M Varma in Islamabad | July 16, 2004 17:55 IST
Last Updated: July 16, 2004 18:51 IST

The US on Friday wrote-off nearly $500 million debt owed by Pakistan under an agreement signed between the two countries, a day after Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage visited Islamabad to discuss among other things Pakistan's chances of sending troops to Iraq.

The agreement to write-off $495.3 million debt was signed in Islamabad by US Ambassador to Pakistan Nancy Powell and Secretary of Pakistan Economic Division Waqar Masood Khan, taking the total debt cancellation during the past two years to $1.5 billion.

Powell appreciated Pakistan's economic policies initiated during the past five years and said the write-off marked a continuation of the US partnership with Pakistan.

"Our continued commitment to Pakistan is a vote of confidence in the economic stewardship of the Pakistani government and the intelligence, energy and resourcefulness of the Pakistani people," she said.

Also visited a friend of my mom's last night, and she talks a mile a minute about EVERYTHING, switching from topic to topic so fast I got whiplash...but one of the things she said when she was talking about being a news hound (now, read the whole thing) "I just love that Fox news, but that does not mean I am voting republican. The war is wrong, and we should not be there and I will NOT vote for the man who took us there" (said so fast I almost missed it)

Would he still be in hiding near or in Pakistan?

The CIA reported over two years ago that they suspected that he fled to Indonesia right after the US allowed many members of Al Q. to escape after the Bora Bora raid. I suspect that he will never be captured or seen again. When he dies he will be buried in a secret place. Usama is an icon to millions and his legend must be kept alive for as long as possible. Al Q. has expanded in spite of all the bluster of the Neo Fascists and is now decentralized in cells all over the globe. The Iraq and Afghanistan invasions spurred the growth of Islamic extremists and further actions by the US to dominate the ME will only cause the resistance to US Imperialism to expand.

130. Naive
You are severely naive if you honestly think the US has no influence within Pakistan.

I would guess that it is more than naivety here really...

136. Funny,
I don't remember the whole "sovereign nation thing" applying at any other time when the Bush regime has been involved.

This is shameless.

137. How Bush affected this?
See the references in this thread - he asked the Pakistanis to catch someone during the Dem convention, forgave them $500 million in debt, and then they captured someone on Sunday, but waited till the day of Kerry's speech to tell anybody.

And there are (or certainly have been) American troops in Pakistan:
"In early December 2001, Pakistan agreed to an American request for a long-term presence at Jacobabad. The US requested 40,000 metric tons of concrete to renovate the base. A wall surrounding the base will be raised by four feet, and air-conditioned barracks would be built for US troops . All but a few Pakistani liaison officers would be withdrawn from the base. US forces would continue to maintain a presence at airfields in Pasni and Dalbandin."

134. Sure it's a good thing.
But we should have had these guys rounded up by now instead of sending our soldiers to die in Iraq for no reason.

139. Chimpy has been doing nothing of the kind.
He's been sending our sons and daughters to Iraq to get blown up instead, all because of some crazy neocon dream.

That's one reason he won't win in November.

146. This is the best they can do
Dig up some puny little guy that is "suspected" of something and make a big deal about it a few hours before the big speech. Expect a lot more of these stunts and tricks in the next few months.

Oh, and did you know that chimp didn't lie? The poor guy was simply mislead, just like the rest of us!

152. Well, it seems that Pakistan is playing their own game...
so for this regime it might be a catch 22 on getting Usama! I guess we will see exactly what he's worth to this regime, eh? How much more can they offer Pakistan?

It seems that Pakistan knows full well where Usama is hiding, but it might not be worth it to bring him in, so they play cat and mouse and put on a show now and then to prove they ARE diligently trying to capture him! They are baiting this regime and I'm not so sure they will give them Usama if it means a civil war for Pakistan. Guess we will see who is the wiliest?

Another point to be made is that in capturing these supposedly HVTs, just how many have our soldiers captured? I'm not talking about the Iraq HVTs because those were a joke just like this invasion. I'm alluding to most of the HVTs coming in via other means rather than our soldiers who have died and/or are dying daily for this farce of a war against terrorism!

154. How far can Junior go with "Ladies and gentlemen, we didn't get him?"
Sounds like the Bush campaign need to investigate alternative sources of energy...

"The words of L. Paul Bremer, "We got him," are illuminated on the control tower at Basra's airport on Sunday, December 14, 2003"
