Police deal with rowdier protests on convention's last day
The Associated Press

BOSTON - After four days of relative calm, protests became tense outside the site of the Democratic National Convention as demonstrators burned a two-faced effigy depicting President Bush on one side and Sen. John Kerry on the other and started a shoving match with police.

About 400 protesters marched Thursday through the city before arriving outside the fenced-in demonstration area outside the FleetCenter. The throng pressed up against police officers who used clubs to keep the crowd at bay.

Several protesters were dragged from the crowd and handcuffed by police. Other screamed at the officers to let them go.

Police Superintendent Robert Dunford said two men were arrested, one because police were told he had a bottle of an unknown accelerant, the other for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

4. well, they have the right to protest
But personally, the extreme left does nothing for our party---and most of them, are not even Democrats. I just hope no one gets hurt.

9. opponents crossed paths
The biggest protests surrounding the convention were Sunday. About 2,000 antiwar activists and a separate group of 1,000 abortion opponents crossed paths briefly as they marched to the FleetCenter as convention delegates were just arriving in town.

That must have been an interesting mix of people

8. Two arrested - makes a total of 3 arrests over the 4 days, so far!
While "Others screamed at the officers to let them go"

My memories of the 68 convention are dim - but I think I recall a bit more fuss.

I wonder if the NY GOP gathering at the end of August will feel more like the 60's?!?!

:-)

11. So where are all the
freeper and fundie protesters? Where are all the Bu$hbot supporters? With the country supposedly evenly split, you would think they could muster at least 10,000 people who oppose Kerry and support Bu$h?

I can't wait for NYC, when an expected 1 mil people turn out to show Bu$h how much they love him, not.
