U.S. Soldier Killed by Explosive in Iraq (Aug. 18)
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An American soldier was killed by an explosive device in Baghdad on Monday, the U.S. military said in a statement.
While the military did not give any further details of how the incident occurred, a Central Command spokesman in Florida said: "It was a hostile act."

The soldier, from the 1st Armored Division, was taken to the 28th Combat Support Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m., the Central Command statement said.

The military said the incident happened in Karada, a mainly Shi'ite neighborhood in central Baghdad.

1. That's the first one in five days
Last previous US KIA was killed by a roadside bomb near ad Dwar, south of Tikrit, 13 August.

4. Thankfully the pace slowed down.
However, the underreporting of the wounded bothers me. All casualties should be included in this news coverage.

9. Oh, Oh!! That's a sign that things are calming down
All because of the leadership of our President George W. Bush, former fighter pilot and Vietnam War hero!

3. Something's odd here
Rest in peace.

Is it odd that this first report of this death is coming out of Florida? Hasn't the "normal" means for reporting casualties been mention in foreign services, then "witnesses said" reports from the US press, *then* the official report?

5. I betcha if Gore or Clinton was in office...
some conservative right wing undercover reporter would be camping somewhere near the Dover base recording every coffin that returns from Iraq and selling it to Faux News.

From what I understand, all deceased soldiers are returned to that base.

Nevertheless, may this soldier rest in peace and all the others that have passed before him/her.

6. How many Votes Is One Dead G. I Worth????????
At least one American soldier was killed and two others were wounded Thursday in a rocket-propelled (search) grenade attack on a U.S. military ambulance in southwest Baghdad, the U.S. military said. (THIS IS NOT BIG NEWS ANY MORE)

The Welsh officer was killed and two other soldiers injured when their military ambulance was ambushed in a remote-controlled bomb attack described by an Army spokesman as "a direct attack on a clearly marked ambulance without any justification." And now we have a another G.I Killed Moday

The Testimony of the Dead
The coalition is now hell-bent on victory at any cost, but it is not a price worth paying - PASS THIS ON, NEVER EVER LET THEM FORGET THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS FIGHTING AND DYING IN IRAQ

8. ...mainly Shi'ite neighborhood
That seems new. If the Shi'ites start going south on us, that would not be good.

10. These stories are fading from the headlines
That's what Team Bush wants. They want these stories buried on p. 26, so there is no public outrage.

17. 132 since 01 may 03
I caught this at the end of the newshour last night. There was nothing reported elsewhere and DU'ers are usually pretty fast at catching these things. Complacency in reporting is something we have to combat and stand vigil against, or these american dead will slip into an oblivion of george w. sinces making.

18. NBC 268 TOTAL
That's what they said this morning. I guess they've given up on ways to keep the number as low as possible in their reports.

Sad so sad

20. Something not right about that 268 number.
I think it should be 277 and I posted the link below. They are leaving people out. I don't know if it's because of where they were killed (Kuwait perhaps?)

19. No, some of us are keeping track every day.
277 US war dead and 131 officially (following family notification.) Here's the list of their names, ages, cause of death, and rank. May their families find their peace.
