Boston - Addressing a unified party and a divided electorate, John Kerry accepted the Democratic nomination for president Thursday, promising to "restore trust and credibility to the White House" and fight a "smarter, more effective war on terror."
"We are here tonight united in one simple purpose: to make America stronger at home and respected in the world," Kerry told a convention arena full of impassioned Democrats.
In a speech aimed at the millions of uncommitted voters still unfamiliar with his life, his thoughts, his makeup and his personality, the 60-year-old Massachusetts senator talked of his parents, his youth, his religious faith and his combat service on a patrol boat in the Vietnam War.
"I defended this country as a young man, and I will defend it as president. Let there be no mistake: I will never hesitate to use force when it is required. Any attack will be met with a swift and certain response. I will never give any nation or any institution a veto over our national security. And I will build a stronger American military," Kerry said.<snip>
