JonBenet Ramsey's Father Seeks Election
JonBenet Ramsey's Father Seeks Election

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The candidates for state representative in Michigan's 105th District are doing what politicians normally do the weekend before a primary election: knocking on doors, attending parades, making get-out-the-vote calls.

But the presence of John Ramsey, father of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, makes this race in rural northern Michigan anything but ordinary.

"It's got all the dynamics of many similar races around the state -- except for John Ramsey," said Bill Ballenger, editor of the Lansing newsletter Inside Michigan Politics.

Ramsey is among six candidates for the Republican nomination, but the others haven't been featured on CNN's "Larry King Live" or profiled in People magazine. Poll results this week indicated an astounding 95 percent of likely GOP voters in the district recognized his name.

"That bit about equal time for the candidates is a farce," complained Jeff Garfield, an Otsego County commissioner and one of Ramsey's rivals.

1. Well, he's a shoo-in
for the all-important "creepy, crypto-pedophilliac exploiters and possible sexual abusers and murderers of their own toddler daughters" vote.

2. He's got name recognition!
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 09:52 PM by khephra
That's almost as important as his personal looks these days!

(Don't laugh. Look at how many people on both sides root for families in politics or how the candidates look instead of how they vote.)

3. Why doesn't he co-host with Joe Scar on MSNBC?
After all, Both of them are not proven guilty as yet.

They should get along.

I bet his name recognition gets him elected - since the media is OK with his type of story.

4. HA! My Mom slammed the door in his face!
My mother lives in the district Ramsey is running in. She called me last week to let me know that he and a few of his campaign staff came to her neighborhood to introduce themselves. She saw them walking up to the door through the window, and went to greet them. She opened the door and he went to shake her hand saying, "Hi, I'm John Ramsey". That is all he could get out before she told him, "Yes, I know who you are, and if you'll excuse me, I've got to go call America's Most Wanted and let them know I have a probable child murder they may be looking for"....and slammed the door in his face!

My mother is 76 years old, and has NEVER done anything like this before in her life! She spent last winter here with me, and by the time she left she was the biggest Republican basher I have ever seen!
I asked her why she did this and she told me that she was sick and tired of hearing all the Republican crap about "family values" and wanted to let Ramsey know that he was not fooling anyone...especially her! She said that that was the most brash thing she had ever done in her life, and it felt soooooo good!

GO MOM!

10. She has never been politically active before
but over the last four years she has become quite the aggressive liberal! When she was here last winter we even volunteered together to drive the "Pants-On-Fire" mobile when it came through Louisiana. I have a 22 year old son, her first grandchild, and she has told me that her activism is because of him, and all her other grandchildren. She told me that she would not tolerate seeing her grandson marched off to war. She wants to leave this world knowing that her grandchildren will have the same opportunities she was given, and she feels very strongly that it is her "moral obligation" to see that the republican party is "destroyed"....her words, not mine.

7. Apart from the killer(s), the creepy pedophile is the new media
that needed to paint the parents as guilty in order to make a sensational story. A lot of leeches tried to get money and get ahead by convicting the family in the media. If you read the article, the Boulder DA says the evidence is more consistent with the crime having been committed by an intruder. The last thing John Ramsey could have wanted was to get notoriety in this way, but since he has it, I don't think he has to hide himself away.

8. There were a lot of leeches on ALL sides, believe me.
I'm acquainted with two of them. There were so many corrupt sides to this story--politically, personally, etc.--that it's no wonder justice hasn't been served in the case.

I can't believe Ramsey is running for office. (Wait a minute...yes I can.)

12. If you read John Douglas, former FBI agent and profiler,
you will find that he is convinced an outsider committed the crime.

I hated all the baby beauty pageant stuff. I think that turned off a lot of people. And the Ramsey's wealth made them suspect in the eyes of many people, too.

This should never have had national media attention. No matter who committed this crime, it should have remainded a local story.

14. He's one of the very few that feel that way.
And if I remember right there was some heavy politics going on with John Douglas and with this case.

I don't buy it!!

9. It is like a Sideshow Bob episode of the Simpsons
"I know he wants to kill me, but I am itching for that upper class tax cut." - Krusty the Clown, about Sideshow Bob.
