Anonymous letter urges cop sickout during Republican convention
NEW YORK (AP) _ In another sign of labor unrest among police heading into the Republican National Convention, someone has circulated a letter urging officers to stage a sickout on the event's first day.

Police officials said Friday they had seen the anonymous letter, but questioned whether it was legitimate.

"We don't know about the authenticity of this letter," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters following a promotion ceremony at police headquarters.

The Patrolmen's Benevolent Association denied being the source, but refused further comment.

1. Hmmmm...
...union guys who generally tend to favor gun control? I can't IMAGINE them being a wee bit pissed at the repubs exploiting a tragedy in their city that killed many of their colleagues.

2. If the cops "sick-out"
Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 09:52 PM by Dhalgren
the Repugs will have to bring in the National Guard. I wonder how New York will like having armed soldiers patrolling the streets. "First we'll take Manhattan, then we'll take Berlin".

5. I saw guardsmen in Boston
while watching convention coverage on C-span so I would suspect there will be soldiers at the Republican convention too.

How many now...that is the question.

7. I doubt the sick out will happen
Just an idle threat, maybe even a hoax designed to provoke sympathy for the Republicans, or a pretext for higher "security", the heightened alert level in NYC might be a convenient coincidence.

By the way, nice Leonard Cohen reference!

6. Maybe THIS is the reason for the latest terror alerts...
I'm just connecting the dots and maybe I'm all wrong, but the police may decide not to protect the convention, so the * admin scares them back into staying the course...

8. There are thousands of cops from across the US going to NY
Mostly Tac squads and young guys trying to get a leg up in their career. Protest at your own risk. They will bust you up.
