CARACAS, Venezuela - Anti-government groups in Venezuela are plotting to attack the country's leader and disrupt next month's presidential recall vote using stolen explosives, top officials allege.
Details of the plots surfaced Friday as the country prepared for the recall referendum Aug. 15 on Hugo Chavez's presidency.
Venezuela is deeply divided between those who see Chavez as a champion of the poor and those who accuse him of becoming increasingly authoritarian. To be recalled, more citizens must vote against Chavez than the nearly 3.8 million who re-elected him in 2000.
Interior Minister Luis Rincon said radicals were seeking to use plastic explosives stolen from a navy base to create chaos during the voting.
"There are people here, and they aren't favored in the polls, who want a scenario of violence," Lucas Rincon said. "They think it will change the result of the vote."
