Statue of Liberty Probe to Continue
NEW YORK -- The charity that runs the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is being asked by Congress to explain some of its expenses, including high salaries for its executives and $45,000 a year for a dog that chases away geese.

The Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation was sent a letter Friday from the Senate Finance Committee, which has been probing the nonprofit's spending since earlier this year. The letter asked the foundation to answer questions about its finances and management, The New York Times reported Saturday.

"The Statue of Liberty Foundation board was too often AWOL or uninformed in managing the foundation and ensuring that charitable donations were being used appropriately," committee Chairman Charles Grassley said in a statement, according to the newspaper.

Grassley, R-Iowa, said he was concerned "the foundation's board may not have been in compliance with tax laws, or even its own bylaws, when it approved high salaries for foundation executives." The charity's president was paid more than $300,000 last year.

1. Honestly. Why don't the Repugs in Congress check out some of the Iraq
war cost overruns? They're ignoring billions of dollars in wasted money while complaining about 45k?

Grow up, Republicans.

2. The dog probably is more useful to society than most of
our congress people, and certainly the prese and vp. A steal at $45,000

3. While I agree that the dog is more useful than the entire * administration
$45K can get you an entire team of dogs from a shelter and pay for their care.

4. Is that $45K just for the dog, or for the dog, handler, and maintenance...

of said dog for the year?

Thinking about it, that's not a huge amount of money, if you're also paying $30K a year for the handler on top of vet bills, food, housing, liability coverage of the dog, and finally, doggy treats to keep the puppy from chowing down on geese in front of the tourists...

5. This Congress is up to its knees in do do. They are allowing
the Bushies a free ride on Haliburton, misuse of money and misuse of power. What about the billions allotted to Afghanistan that went to starting the Iraq War instead? and all the other abuses.
