Iraqi group claims over 37,000 civilian toll
An Iraqi political group says more than 37,000 Iraqi civilians were killed between the start of the US-led invasion in March 2003 and October 2003.

The People's Kifah, or Struggle against Hegemony, movement said in a statement that it carried out a detailed survey of Iraqi civilian fatalities during September and October 2003.

Their calculation included deaths only among the Iraqi civilian population, and did not count losses sustained by the Iraqi military and paramilitary forces.

The deputy general-secretary and spokesperson of the People's Kifah Movement told Aljazeera.net he could vouch for the accuracy of the figure.

4. I wonder what the Iraqi death-count is from October 2003 to now?...
If you used a conservative estimate of 1500-2000 deaths per month throughout Iraq from November 2003 through July 2004 (nine months), you would arrive at a range of 13500 to 18000 additional Iraqi deaths.

That gives a grand total of somewhere in the range of 50,500 and 55,000 Iraqi civilian dead since the illegal and unwarranted invasion.

7. Can we use "conservative estimate" now that they're no longer
conservatives? It's almost to the point where you have to say "conservative estimate in the traditional sense".:eyes:
The conservative estimate in the bush era would be two Iraqis dead per month. One struck by lightning, the other died from boredom.

12. Kinda like the amorphous and mysterious U.S. "wounded."
Will we EVER find out the truth? Probably not, since we still don't know the death/wounded count from Gulf War I.

14. Not knowing whether I believe them or not...
I did some quick peeking for other counts.

And these guys are still around:

http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

Their numbers may not be accurate, although they try. They may not be able to get all of it. They are mentioned in the article, and from their methodology, I suspect their numbers are low. Way low.

Some of it they may not get is the internal violence between Iraqi factions:

http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/engmde140412004

Interesting story about how we may or may not have stopped the civilian body count, also referredd to in the article:

http://www.universalfriends.org/halt-to-death-count.html

Without knowing more about this survey, it's impossible to tell just how close they are to the truth, but it's certainly not inconceivable.

Are they counting death from injuries or disease vaguely and indirectly related to war activities, or directly from attacks? If one wants to count all the dead who would not be dead without the war, the numbers could be staggering.
