US Anti-Drug Campaign 'Failing'
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 02:21 AM by alittlelark
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3540686.stm

Mr Walters said in Mexico that billions of dollars of investment over many years have failed to dent the flow of Latin American cocaine onto US streets. "We have not yet seen in all these efforts what we're hoping for on the supply side, which is a reduction in availability," he said in Mexico City.

But he predicted positive results would be seen within a year.

'Plan Colombia' failure

Mr Walters was speaking just after he had visited Colombia.
His comments can be seen as an admission that the so-called Plan Colombia has been a failure.

This initiative to wipe out drug smuggling gangs and eradicate coca crops has seen the Colombian government become the third largest recipient of US military aid in the world.
While praising Mexico's efforts to combat the drugs trade, Mr Walters also said that there'd been no notable disruption in the supply of drugs to the US.

Anti-narcotics raids had been successful in removing a number of important cartel leaders but had not led to any shortage.

Maybe it will be as sucessful as the 'War On Terror' <sarcasm>

1. Two ways to win a war on cocaine
1. Make cocaine no fun anymore

- or -

2. Find a safe, legal drug that is more fun than cocaine and sell the shit out of it.

I'm sorry, folks, but as long as doing cocaine is more fun than doing legal things, people will do whatever it takes to get it.

2. The simple solution: legalize drugs
I'm all for it. We're wasting so much money on this "war on drugs"...it could be put to better use, like health care or education.

6. Detroit just voted to legalize medical marijuana
It's a small step in the right direction. Ann Arbor has a similar initiative on the Novemeber ballot-it should pass, marijuana is already decriminalized into a ticketable offense there ($45 ticket, no criminal record and confiscation of your stash). State police in AA still enforce the state law, if they catch someone.

3. THE PRISON--INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX WON'T BUDGE
They depend on the "DRUG WAR" to provide their shareholders with dividends paid by the taxpayer.

The same kind of suburban white immaculately prejudiced tax payer who hates "DARKIES" and wants to see them all "LOCKED UP" .

These white folks think the Klan is a criminal enterprise and they themselves find white sheets abhorrent--- but as long as someone else from a lower class--(the police, jailers prison guards clerks) do the dirty work.

The soccer folks are satisfied. They want Pedro and Juan locked up too. They like Pedro's food they just don't want to be near Pedro or have him hang around with their daughter either.

4. And don't forget all the police departments profiting off the
asset seizure laws. They don't want that cash cow killed.

5. The so-called 'War on Drugs' is nearly 2 decades old now
but in the greater picture, people have been using drugs for thousands of years, and will continue to do so. It's a hard-wired component of humanity.

The only truly enlightened thing to do is to legalize drugs and then educated people on their objective and subjective effects and then let them decide for themselves.

But this isn't about drug users. It's about the prison and law enforcement industries gourging themselves on taxpayer money. :-(

8. Now here's a drug problem:
Figure 1. Annual Numbers (in Millions) of New Nonmedical Users of Pain Relievers Aged 12 or Older: 1970–2001

As long as pharmaceutical companies can make a big profit, it's of no concern to the drug warriors. But remember, marijuana is dangerous and addictive!
