Kerry in Gallup for powwow
The Associated Press

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry made a whistle-stop here Sunday for an inter-tribal Indian powwow where he pledged to honor treaties and consult on national issues such as health care.

“When I take the oath of office as president of the United States,” he told an estimated 5,000 people at Red Rock State Park, “I will uphold the law of the land, and that includes treaties and the special relationship that exists between the United States and the Indian nations.” ..

“It is a sad fact,” the Democratic nominee said, “that one-third of Native Americans lack health insurance, and it’s a sad fact the life expectancy of Native Americans is lower than other groups.’

“We spend more money on the health care of federal prisoners ,” he said, “than we do on the health care of Native Americans.” ...

He also honored their war sacrifice:
The Inter-tribal Ceremonial focused as well on the war in Iraq.

The ceremony of the fallen feather was part of the program . The feather signifies the loss of a loved one in war. A bereaved relative or representative of the soldier’s family picks up the feather. On Sunday, it was picked up by Larry Anderson, a former tribal councilor. The name of the soldier was not mentioned during the event.
(snip/...)
We remember the Bush campaign really fought hard about recounting New Mexico votes in 2000, but we just haven't read any articles concerning Bush's concern for New Mexico residents since then, and he's had four years.

Meanwhile he's been to Florida around 25 times, or more, and Pennsylvania over 20 times, etc., etc.
