CA Sec of State Shelley Controversy Grows w/ Campaign Donations
Hmmmmm.....Coincidink? Does anyone else here on the DU think that this is just awfully convenient to have this "suddenely" happen less than 3 months prior to perhaps the most important presidential election of our lifetimes and in a state where the Democratic Secretary of State Kevin Shelley had taken a bold move early on in de-certifying the Diebold voting machines and his other efforts for getting absentee voters in CA? Anyone else think that the Republicans might demand his resignation soon so Ahnuld can try to appoint a Republican replacement? Hmmmmm......

Donations to Shelley raise new questions -$30,000 political contribution was made on same day as 3-way property transaction

Saturday, August 14, 2004
______________

Julie Lee, a San Francisco real estate agent at the center of a federal investigation into $175,000 in suspect donations to Kevin Shelley's 2002 campaign for secretary of state, may have diverted another $30,000 to the campaign as part of a three-way real estate deal, according to state and city records.

With the help of a friend, Lee and her husband, Shing-Kit Lee, sold a home in the city's Portola district to Eliana Maldonado, 62, on Sept. 27, 2002, city records show. The same day, Maldonado wrote two checks to Shelley's campaign totaling $30,000, the second-largest amount Shelley received from an individual, noncorporate donor during the race, campaign records show.

The donation from Maldonado is the latest in a series of potentially illegal contributions to Shelley's campaign reported by The Chronicle this week. Those donations all appear to have ties to Lee or the San Francisco Neighbors Resource Center, which she founded in 1999 to provide services to immigrants. The donations, including Maldonado's, total $205,000. Shelley's campaign raised a total of $2.15 million.

The FBI, which raided Lee's office Thursday, the Fair Political Practices Commission, the state controller and state attorney general all began looking into donations to Shelley's campaign this week.

2. Its totally outrageous...It suddenely appeared in the papers this week...
...I couldn't believe it! I don't believe for a minute that Kevin Shelley would knowingly accept any contribution that was questionable. His father was a US Congressman from CA and he knows too well about these kind of things. Furthermore, if one reads the stories, there is no indication that he knew, yet the FBI is investigating....

I smell a rat...I think someone "tipped" the SF Chronicle reporters to go "investigate" a hot story and the story was a set-up from the beginning....I'd like to know who is behind Ms. Lee and her friends...

Kevin Shelley has been an amazing advocate for the California Voters in protecting their rights and making sure we don't become another Florida Fiasco....

Stay tuned...we haven't heard the end of this story....I'm pissed...:grr:

4. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this one is just way to coincidink for
me and the timing very suspicious....

Notice how Smirky seems "really confident" about California and has been mentioning it in his speeches? When he was here Friday and "visiting Nancy Reagan" and then hanging with Ahnuld, I felt a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach that not all is right.

They will do whatever it takes....

6. Yep......we are watching the power grab unfold now, full steam ahead.
There is no question what this is.
I heard Bush/GOP suggest that the Dems not take California for granted.
A threat for sure.....and who knows what message Bush delivered to Nancy Reagan. But you can bet it wasn't cordial. This is how a mafia works....one takedown at a time. And as I said, if the FBI is in their pocket and perhaps the CIA, I don't know how it can be stopped.

8. Did you see the film clip of Nancy Reagan with Dubya in front of her house
...she looked like she was being forced to being with him and very frail and scared....it actually made me fear for her seeing this....very very bizarre...

Yes Dover, I'm afraid they are working behind the scenes like busy lil bees planning their next steps for the big power grab....

I won't give up, but I'll admit that if this is the kind of things that they would do....what is going to happen?

17. I warned, again and again and again
during the lead up to the CA recall, when SOOOOO many DUers were so damned sanguine about Arnold, that the needed to NOT let him win. Was it ALSO a coincidence that on the Monday before Friday's "surprise" announcement by Arnold that he would run in the recall, there was an article in Newsmax that the Bush/Cheney campaign thought both CA and NY were "ripe for the picking"?? I didn't think so then, and I definitely don't think so now.

18. None of this is "coincidence"...I predict "Terror Attacks" in NY & CA
in October....they will be biological and both Pataki and Schwarzenegger will declare martial law. This combined with other efforts in order to "thwart" and steal the election in those two states, thereby guaranteeing their "electoral" victories....

Yeah, comments like those make me queasy and I agree, I warned people before the recall of Gray Davis what we could be expecting....

20. Being a "conspiracy theorist" is more than an adventure...............
It's a way of life. Really though, why some, like me like to dwell in it is because sometimes there are keys there in the expectations of what the future might bring from knowing about the hidden past. It's kind of simple when you think about it.

People of all walks of life do that type of thinking. When it becomes irrational is where the problem is. That why there are so many of them types here. We can joke about it and not get into hot water for it.

Heck sometimes you even learn something

5. I think this is why Shelley caved on the Diebold machines a while back
Shelley was trying to cut a deal, but the Diebold folks already have it in for him. They found the dirt, and now they're going to take him down hard no matter what he does. When they're done, he won't be electable as dog catcher. Ahnuld will replace him with someone more suitable to republican interests, I'm sure.

7. I have Zero doubt that Diebold and Rove's fingerprints are behind this
Although I believe Shelley has a lot of convictions and can't be bought...I think that he'll fight back and stand firm....unless ofcourse I'm wrong and then we are all screwed and they are going to try to take him down and steal the election....

9. No doubt about it......
.....I hope he's at the Voting Systems Panel meeting on Wednesday, I'll ask him for his thoughts on the matter. :(

Remember, Bush* LOST California in 2000 by over 1.2 MILLION votes and he hasn't done anything for the state since to punish us for that embarrassment! We lost 17,300 'non farm' payroll jobs last month alone in addition to the hundreds of thousands of good paying high tech jobs lost and out sourced in the last three and a half years. There is NO WAY Bush* can legitimately win an election here! :scared:

14. You would think he'd be commended for his absentee ballot efforts, not
criticized...Anybody know where those "complaining" county registrars are? Couldn't possibly be in areas like San Diego et al where there is more "conservative" votes, ya think? :eyes:

11. Not just about this election...
This is also a move to neutrilize Shelley as a future gubernatorial candidate.

As a San Franciscan, I have seen Shelley close up as a politician for years. He has always been one of the clean ones and it has been long known he was heading to the top state office someday.

When this story first broke, I said immediately this was an attempt by someone to put the breaks on Shelley's career.

:grr:

15. Me too Tahoe Mommy!
:hi:

It's long been known that Shelley as well as State Attorney General Lockyer (and maybe SF Mayor Gavin Newsom) plan to challenge Ahnuld in the next election.....While Gavin Newsom has been a hero to many (myself included) he is still fresh and needs more experience (although I guess that doesn't really make sense when you look at Ahnuld's qualifications), but the best candidate/challenger has been looking like Shelley and I guess the de-railing & political smut has begun.

However, like you Tahoe Mommy, this Mom smelled something the second I picked up the Newspaper last week and started reading about this "investigation" and it wasn't my Pachababy's diaper.....

:grr:
