Former NY mayor Giuliani takes early pot-shot at Kerry
Former NY mayor Giuliani takes early pot-shot at Kerry, a week before Republican convention

August 16, 2004, 3:55 AM EDT

SINGAPORE (AP) _ Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani took his message of support for U.S. President George W. Bush's re-election to Singapore Monday, saying his decision to invade Iraq was just while calling his opponent someone who easily "changes positions."

"You can't play defense ... (President Bush is) trying to find the destabilizing forces before they become powerful," said Giuliani at the 2nd Global Brand Forum in Singapore.

snip............

He called himself a "very committed Republican" despite criticism a decade ago when he crossed party lines to endorse Democrat Mario Cuomo as governor over George Pataki.

"Senator Kerry has in the past changed positions," unlike President Bush who was "doing an excellent job," Giuliani said.

snip..........

He called the war in Iraq "enormously successful," but acknowledged there were problems stabilizing the country and predicted it would take a number of years before it returns to normal.

"Democracy is a human process, and its better than no process at all," he added, in reference to Iraq.

1. I had some respect for him
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 03:44 AM by fujiyama
immediately after 9/11, but that has faded away over time. Now I can't stand him, probably even more than I did before 9/11.

What a moron. Iraq was enormously succesful?! This guy is in such obvious denial. I'm glad the networks aren't carrying him though.

17. Rudy was in on 9-11 just like the rest of the Bush Crime Family.
Didn't it seem odd he was so Johnny on the spot, just like FEMA was. Of course Fema had to go around and plant "evidence" like TERRORIST passports, but Guliani, who said he didn't have any warning was able to appear to be the hero without really doing anything of substance.

19. He wasn't going to disburse 9/11 donations until after the holidays
He announced that wouldn't happen until the end of March. Only the resulting public outcry made him change his mind. The end of March, as in a fiscal quarter? What was he planning to do--divert the funds to something else, or pocket the interest?

5. Are there any principled politicians in the Republican Party?
If there are, who are they and where are they? From talk shows to news reports I've not heard, or read about one single Republican who has stood on principle and called GWB a liar. It seems they are all lying for him, changing his diaper and selling America to the highest bidder. The fight is not just against terrorists. It is against the unprincipled politicians led by GWB as a puppet for his father POPPY Bush who have taken over this country.

A cabinet position or other appointive post ? Ridge's job ?

Shares or a board seat in Carlyle ?

10. He's a fascist, so he should like Bush
He made the trains run on time. He cleaned up NYC, yes he did. The homeless disappeared from the streets. Affordable housing did not appear, but the homeless were just gone. Times Square got Disneyfied. Crime was down, which is undeniably a good thing, however his stormtroopers killed a few innocent people in the process and he didn't seem to mind very much. He's got a bunker mentality just like the Fascist -in-Chief, too. Yes men and women were the only ones who were tolerated.

No one's every claimed that fascists can't get things done. Some of the things he did even needed doing. There is no question that the city was cleaner and safer under Guiliani. But if you can't do them without supressing the spirit of a city then you're not doing anything all that amazing.

14. Coming from a guy who "easily" changes wives
Does everyone just forget how he gave a press conference to inform his wife Donna Hanover that he was having an affair and wanted a divorce? How he abandoned his family and moved out of Gracie Mansion and then took his mistress to his public events instead? This is who George Bush wants speaking for him?

16. 1. Giuliani attacking Kerry is not for *'s benefit. It's practice for
2008 when Kerry runs for re-election. Giuliani would like to be at least in the primaries.

2. While I think Giuliani is vile and despicable, I don't endorse personal attacks on him. Stick to his record as a federal prosecutor and mayor of New York City. We don't have to lower ourselves to the level of the freepers.

18. I agree- stick to his record
The abuses of citizens by NYPD during his tenure is an issue to stick to. The cops who emptied their guns into the guy who was looking for his i.d., or the way the cops sodomized the man in jail with a broomstick are some good examples of how NYPD functioned under Rudy.

Rudy has a good personal touch with people, and that's why he's liked. He was great on 9-11, handling the media and the efforts of the Fire Department to rescue and recover. Attacking him personally wouldn't do much good, and it is sleazy to do. The media would undoubtedly bring up his marriage, infidelity and divorce, but everyone knows about it so it really isn't a scandal.
