Associated Press

FERRIS - A downtown chemical plant exploded today, killing at least one person, injuring at least six and prompting an evacuation, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Ellis County Sheriff's Department has shut down access to the area surrounding the plant.

Aerial views of the facility showed emergency vehicles surrounding a business identified as C & G Manufacturing. The DPS confirmed precautionary evacuations were under way within a mile radius of the plant.

Ellis County Commissioner Hallie Joe Robinson told The Dallas Morning News that he believes the plant is involved in manufacturing aircraft parts. He also said he spoke briefly with a Ferris city worker who was at the scene shortly after the explosion.

Ferris is a town of about 2,300 residents.

10. Just what I was thinking. I work in Texas and safety is *not* a big
consideration.

Texas DPS: Injured Being Treated For Chemical Inhalation

UPDATED: 3:57 pm EDT August 26, 2004

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A chemical plant in Ellis County exploded Thursday morning, critically injuring one person, injuring at least 11 more, and prompting an evacuation.
<snip>
Vinger said some chemicals apparently mixed together -- causing a fire and explosion and forcing the evacuation of about 800 people -- roughly one-third of the population of Ferris. Hazardous materials teams were at the scene.
Aerial views of the facility showed emergency vehicles surrounding the business, reportedly a manufacturer of aircraft parts.

Plant explosion injures at least 12 in downtown Ferris
Associated Press
FERRIS -At least a dozen people were taken to hospitals and about 800 were evacuated Thursday after a fire and chemical explosion at downtown business in this small North Texas town, the Texas Department of Public Safety said
<snip>
DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said the blast erupted at an aircraft parts refurbishing site and that the injured were being treated for chemical inhalation.
"What happened was there were employees on the plant grounds who were transporting chemicals," Vinger said. "Two chemicals or multiple chemicals that mixed together, caused a fire and explosion. The fire has been put out."

Of course, good luck connecting the dots. Maybe Greg Palst could, but not our news media jokers.
