`Send him back to Texas': More than 100,000 march against Bush
NEW YORK (AP)

Police gave no official crowd estimate, though one law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, put the crowd at 120,000; organizers claimed it was roughly 400,000. ..

Residents leaned from windows along the demonstration route to shout their support. Scattered opposition was visible only around Madison Square Garden, where the GOP convention opens Monday. Some early convention arrivals looked across police lines, shouting at demonstrators: "Go home!"

"I hope this shows the world that they're not alone in their hatred of George Bush," said Alan Zelenki of Eugene, Ore., who planned for three months to attend this week's protests. ..

1. there were closer to 1/2 million

120,000? That is insane. I was at the anti-war rallies and they were smaller than this event.

on edit: The delegates were telling New Yorkers to go home? That is very very funny.

16. Just count Rose-Bowlfuls ... and multiply by 100,000.
I got 7 or 8 from what I could see on CSPAN.

It really shouldn't be that difficult for folks who've attended enough stadium events.

2. Please, please...
...we don't want "it". Spare us from the resident carpetbagger. Yeah, I know, too many vodka shooters but really, "it" isn't welcome back here.

7. no doubt!
no vodka shooters here (yet), and I STILL don't want "it" OR the rest of "it"'s family here. Poor Florida and Maine, they've been invaded by "them" too...damn, "they"'re everywhere! :+

3. Corporate whores simply can't
bring themselves to utter the truth. A half million would be a conservative estimate of the number of protestors today.

4. CNN certainly doesn't want to face this. I think management there is
convinced the BIG numbers are with the conservatives. This throws such a notion right into the toilet. It only underscores a HUGE untapped audience that they COULD be embracing - which would certainly be happy to embrace CNN if they were deserving. Unfortunately, CNN is NOT deserving.

5. The media characterizes George W. Bush as likable.
Newsflash for all the mediawhores out there: Likable people do not have over 100,000 people march against them.

9. Please don't send him back here!
I think Florida would be much more appropriate, with its Fantasyland theme parks and all.

His little farm could go fallow, and nobody here in Texas would notice or give a hoot.

12. All I know is that it was a sea of humanity
We waited a couple of hours to enter at 19th Street and it took 2 1/2 hours to get to the Garden (15 blocks). Then it opened up a bit and we never made it back to Union Square, opting instead to go to Central Park. At 4:30 we talked to a friend who reported that the end of the march was passing MSG. This time the organizers might be right as I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than 400,000. 100,000 is a gross understatement I'm sure.
