The CLG's Lori Price and Michael Rectenwald reporting on the action live from the march protest of the Repugnant Nazi Carnival in NYC.

Report: Sunday, 4:05 PM. We are at the Great Lawn at Central Park with thousands of others who are more than annoyed at Bush and the Neocons. A shouting match broke out with some few supporters of Bush. Such shouting matches attract the media, although they ignore what the tens of thousands of protesters say otherwise. They are looking for conflicts and ways to make the protesters look bad. But we are sitting on the lawn holding our signs, proving we can be in Central Park. A huge Fuji blimp is being used by the NYPD and buses are available for use in the events of mass arrests. We are making a huge peace sign out of people now! We are standing being arranged into a gigantic peace sign and are yelling, "What do we want? Peace! When do we want it? Now!" We are shouting "Whose park? Our park! Now the police are moving in on us. Police calling in for reinforcements. The police are definitely moving in now. We are probably with the more radical end of the protests here. We are reciting the non-violent pledge of resistance. Chants of "Four more months! Four more months!" are being repeated. About ten thousand people are still here in the Park, without permit. A stand off is very likely. Stay tuned.

Report: Sunday, 2:30 PM EST: We are at Union Square. United for Peace and Justice has announced that this is the end of the "legal march." Protesters proceeding to Central Park do so at the risk of arrest. Here at Union Square there are police on bikes, on horses, in vans, cars, and in helicopter. We will rally here a while and check Central Park for developments. Check back soon. Reporting live from NYC at Union Square, Lori Price and Mike Rectenwald.

2. This is from 4:05 EDT. Has anyone heard from them since then?
It's been more than four hours since they updated their site.

3. I was on the Great Lawn until almost 5
But I didn't see any police moving in where I was. The police were lounging around the outskirts. There were 4-5 thousand there, one group had formed a circle with some musicians playing drums and horns, some folks were dancing. Pretty much a Woodstock kind of atmosphere. A lot more people were wandering around different sections of the park, or laying on the grass sunbathing. As I left, I saw more people from the march still entering the park.

9. Me too, from 3 till about 5
Very mellow, there were softball games on the north end of the Lawn that were undisturbed. People were generally sharing the space with sunbathers, some of whom were no doubt tired marchers.

Heard that on the east side of the park, the cops were taking the cardboard tubes from people but on the west side they weren't. That's typical of these things. Different cops will tell you different things or follow different rules.

5. MODS, Please lock
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 08:16 PM by rawstory
No, I don't really want this locked -- but this site is a legitimate news site and Raw Story is not? (Police violate 1971 ban on videotaping protesters: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x786326) I'm happy to have a discussion in ask the admins, but I'm interested in hearing others' feedback as well. Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

6. Central Park on Demo Day: Protesters, sunbathers and lots of grass
... Their T-shirts announced their intentions. The front: "Unauthorized Protester." The back: "Permits? We don't need no stinkin' permits" ...

Thousands peacefully protest in Park
BY ROBERT POLNER AND LINDSAY FABER
Staff Writers
August 29, 2004, 8:16 PM EDT

Though the city had ordered anti-war demonstrators to keep off the Great Lawn in Central Park, 3,000 headed there anyway Sunday.

But no one rioted. No one fought with police officers. Instead, some of them plopped down on the ground, arranging their bodies to form a giant peace sign. Others made a huge "NO."

The grass didn't seem any worse for the wear, and the participants looked especially pleased as they brushed themselves off. Many then turned to enjoying the summer day.

7. I would like to point out that the grass at Union Square
was unafraid of the protestors.

I have pictures but no way to post them.

8. That's some tough grass in Union Square
able to survive decades of protesters. The Central Park grass is effete liberal Central Park Conservancy grass. Opera goers must tiptoe on it.
