You can call Michael Moore a lot of things — and Republicans do. They say the creator of "Fahrenheit 9-11" is a traitor, a liar, a scoundrel, but inevitably some deploy the last acceptable slur in the American arsenal of insults.

They call him ... a fat man.

Moore, who attended this week's Republican National Convention as a columnist for USA Today, was greeted by delegates who derided him as a "fat pig."

Perhaps they read the book by David Hardy and Jason Clarke, "Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man." Or they came across the suggested slogan for the Web site moorewatch.com — "Michael Moore: Putting the vast in vast left-wing conspiracy."

Or Andrea Harris' screed in her "Too Much to Dream" blog, describing Moore as "fattyfatfat, Fatty McFatperson Three-Big-Macs Corpulent Sack of Fat." Or conservative columnist Ben Shapiro's dismissal of the "fat, fraudulent filmmaker."

I've been overwieght since 4th grade, not something I'm proud of, but I'm not overly ashamed of it either. I used to be very sensitive to name calling, not all of it regaurding my weight but that's a whole 'nother box of donuts.

Over the years I've developed a pretty healthy sense of humor, and an industrial streangth sense of sarcasm. I have embraced what I call "The Way of The Smart-Ass" and I am on a quest to earn the grand master's belt.

In my Zen-like study of all things obscene, and/or insulting, I have discovered that there are at least three types of insults, the kind that are made in jest, the kind that are made with wit, and the kind that malicious. I've heard my fair share of both, and can easliy distinguish between the three.

The first, as I define it, is simply insults shared between friends. My friends and I often go round and round swapping all manner of insults, sparring, as it were. Barbs exchanged between my cousin and I, some of which could make Micheal Powell's face melt off ala Raiders of the Lost Ark, are merely terms of endearment. All this is done in fun, no one is really offended and it keeps our wits sharp for when it matters.

The second type, as I define it, is the practical application of wit and sarcasm in a "live target" enviroment. This would be any scenario where witty, sarcastic insults are used in a confrontational manner. Attacking, deflecting, baiting, throwing an opponent off balance, point and counter point, it has all the elements of a fencing match. Artful, verbal combat between two masters is a truly amaizing thing to watch. The insults and smartass quips in this type of exchange, though heated, are all based on truthful, solid, well thought out arguments, the fight is fair. Each participant has defended their point of veiw with honor, but in the end, someone in this scenario is going home pissed off.

The third type of insult, as I define it, is intended purley to make another person feel bad. There is no wit, there is no sarcasm, there is no skill, and no honor. This is the type of insult a desperate, and/or ill-equipped person uses when they have nothing valid to throw at someone, but lacks the common sense to stay quiet. The weapons choices in this arena are very limited here are a few in decending order.


Attacking a persons personal fitness.
Sure they might be out of shape, but they could decide to take personal responsibility for their condition and do something about it. In a year they could be tri-atholon winners, you on the otherhand would still be a dumbass.

Attacking the way someone dresses.
Maybe they like the way they dress, maybe they can't afford better clothes, maybe it's laundry day, and you just insulted the CEO of the company you work for... by the way your fly is open.

Attacking someones physical characteristics.
So he has a big nose, so what, he was born that way. So she has a mole, Maralyn Monroe and Cyndi Crawford had moles. So he's got a big scar on his leg, he earned it fighting for our counrty you idiot and I dare you to say it to his face.

Attacking someones race, ethnicity, or cultural background.
They are, who they are. They are from where they are from, and there culture makes our richer, fuller and more interesting.

Attacking someones disability.
This one I take rather personally so I won't go off on a long rant about this one, other than to say keep talking fucktard, by back yard is plenty big.

Attackin someone's mother.

Do Not.

I repeat.

Do NOT ever go after somebody's mother. It is the single most dishonorable thing that a person can say in a verbal confrontation. There is only one counter argument to insulting someones mother, it's called a right hook, followed by a chair... then maybe a grand piano.
