Calif. Recall Support Waning, Poll Says
California voters are losing their thirst for recalling Gov. Gray Davis, according to a new poll released amid signs that both Democrats and Republicans are moving to throw support behind their respective front runners.

The Los Angeles Times poll Friday showed half of likely voters support throwing Davis out of office, while 45 percent are opposed. Just 4 percent are undecided. The poll of 801 likely voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Earlier surveys suggested the recall was supported by more than half of voters.

"In 1998, I was called 'roadkill,' 'given up for dead' with about two months to go and we won by 20 points," Davis reminded reporters in San Diego. "So do not be surprised if you see some polls in the near future that are more favorable than the ones you have seen in the past. It's the nature of this business. It's a very volatile time."

1. It's also the nature of the media and of the polls (push-polls that is)
Best case scenario: people vote against the recall AND get re-educated about bushco-Enron fleecing of California&rest of us. I think California trully holds the fate of the country in their hands. As it goes, so will the country in 2004.

2. Sounds Like Arnold Isn't Wearing Well
Two hours in a movie theater is time enough. At least people can get up and go to the bathroom or the refreshment stand. :-)

6. His face lift is very distracting in his commercials, and Tom Lantos...
notwithstanding, that accent can't help. Granted, most Californians talk with an accent today that isn't the same one most Californians talked with 40 years ago, Austrian sounds kind of strange.

But the media (including 88.1, one of the NPR stations in SF) is working really hard to get Arnold elected.

10. He isn't very photogenic, surprisingly enough.
I think that campaign and political photos have their own separate rules.

3. this is what I had been hoping for all along!

My mom lives in CA and she has been gung-ho for the "Governator" since before he announced his candidacy. I talked to her yesterday and she told me she is sick of him, and would rather Davis stay in office now, because the circus is getting embarassing.

What I hope comes from all this is that Davis prevails by a convincing margin. There won't be a landslide, but I hope it will be enough to convince the people of CA that a great wrong has been committed against them. Their governor should have been spending this time working for them instead of defending himself like this. It's the same shit the Pugs tried to pull with Clinton. I hope this time it will hit closer to home for a lot of people, and we'll learn not to tolerate it anymore.

edit: Clarity

7. The circus without the economic pinch probably would have helped Arnold.
But the economic pinch makes people take this very seriously.

I wonder if the gains in the economy (stock market and dollar) are aimed at Californians? I wonder if the economy is going to tank again after the October?

5. Here's a little blast from the past:

White House is Worried About Political Impact of Bush's Ignorance of California Crisis, is Seeking
"Attention Getting Measures," But is Still Opposed to Price Caps.

"The White House, which has
steadfastly resisted California's pleas to impose firm caps on runaway electricity prices, is also
worried about the political impact if the administration is seen as ignoring the state's crisis,
advisers said. As part of a general push to show that the Bush team cares about
California, Vice President Dick Cheney and Spencer Abraham, the secretary of energy, have
briefed industry executives and California politicians on what the federal government can and
cannot do to help resolve the situation. The administration is also exploring some potentially
attention- getting measures to address the crisis. Under one proposal, Mr. Bush would order a
nuclear-powered submarine to help provide peak power supplies for the state's grid.
Administration officials have also considered turning on the generators on mothballed Navy ships
in San Francisco Bay. Imposing tough price caps, the most pressing concern for most California
Democrats, is off the table, said people who have participated in the discussions. Federal
regulators imposed some caps last week, but California has pushed for broader and stricter
limits. The administration has said it is opposed to caps of any kind," according to the New York
Times.

8. We've become
the laughing stock and maybe enough Californians are waking up to that fact.

No matter how the Repugs try to remake Ah-nold he still comes out looking like the action-hero actor that he is. He has yet to say anything of depth regarding policy - probably because he doesn't know anything. He's alienated the conservatives who nonetheless seem hell bent on supporting him just to get a Republican for governor.

CA is the 5th largest economy in the world. The Recall is damn scary when you think about what really is at stake here.

11. If Davis wins...
...by law, the state of California has to reimburse him for his campaign expenses. I would love to see the Dems use that (in the event Davis pulls it off). "The Right Wing Power Grab Cost Californians an additional $100 million."
