they always had the race within a few points (like most polls) and recently had a 4-5 bounce for chimpy. Now it's less, so it's a trend.

a 13-14 point voter swing from preconvention polling (ABC comes to mind) seems a little far-fetched.

THis shoudl be fun: Today, at 3:00 p.m. Eastern, we will release favorability ratings for Zell Miller, Bill Frist, Tom Delay, and others. At that time, we will also provide a brief analysis of the President's Convention bounce in the polls.

6. I know I'm not the only one who found Bill Frist extremely weird. |
|
His speech was so damn lame -- in fact the whole week weirded me out. I couldn't help watching it (that know thy enemy stuff) or I should more accurately say drifting in and out of consciousness and hearing the odd word here and there. For a moment during Frist's speech I was stuck in a strange Mulberry, Leave It Beaver time warp, transfixed by his junior Lott-like helmet.

observation of Frist and a few other GOP speaker's hair: "This is what you look like when you won't let gay people touch you."
The 50s certainly were better than today. Eisenhower was a Republican and he didn't wreck the country. Thing is there is nothing Bunnypants can do to turn back the clock.
We are here now, and it sucks.

are better today? Do you really think that if Bush is re-elected there will be any chance of a progressive rebirth in our life time? You really believe that Bush is better than Eisenhower? You really believe Bush is better than Eisenhower who warned us of the military industrial complex? If that is the case then what are we all so freaked out about a second Bush term?

Just because I said I lived through it doesn't give cause for anyone to respond with words like "so you think" and then put words in my mouth. If you're prentending to have psychic abilities, you've got to be the worst psychic in the world.
Things were not "good" in the 50's. They improved vastly in the 60's. What do you think we were rebelling against in the 60's?
Bush better than Eisenhower? GMAFB. Eisenhower had his strenghts and weaknesses. Bush, as we all know, is by far the worst president in history. Bush has nothing but weaknesses.

35. I never said that you said "good" |
|
That was my first expression of *my* opinion of the 50's.
Why should I "lighten up" when you put all those outrageous words into my mouth? Go back and read your post responding to my original post. And think about it before flying off the handle again like that. And remember, all I said in my first post was, in essence, that I had grown up in the 50's and rebelled in the 60's. I had made no value judgments in that original post about either that time or the current time. Yet you jumped to all these insane conclusions in your post about what you presumed to be my thoughts on subjects you raised. Sorry if you don't get it, but to ordinary people, such tactics are extremely offensive.

it's that things are far worse politically in this country today than they've ever been, and economically worse than anything since the Great Depression. Socially and culturally, we're still backwards compared to European countries.
The 50's were a time of post-war economic boom, political blandness, social dullness, but full of racism, McCarthyism, etc., etc. - on reflection, not a very pretty picture. But at least we had Walter Cronkite and a press that wasn't the personal property of a neo-con right wing group of historically irrelevant monsters who have voraciously gobbled up our press today.
There were some very ugly things happening in the 50's.
There are some very ugly things happening right now.
It really doesn't occur to me to try to compare them. They're just too different in too many ways. I wouldn't want to live through the 50's again, but I suppose I'd take it over four more years of corporate neocons controlling the White House, Congress, the Courts, and the Media.

term, Joe McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover will seem like boy scouts compared to what Ashcroft and Porter Goss will do. And we are and will continue to do much more than just sabre rattling.
We had a media that made the effort to show McCarthy for what he was. Yeah, he did a lot of damage but he was stopped. Where is that media now? Bush and Ashcroft have essentially received a pass. Where are the Edward R. Murrows? No one in the media is asking hard questions about the Patriot Act.
No need to be insulting. I've read plenty of history. I don't remember anyone ever comparing Eisenhower to Hitler. If things really are better today in our government than they were in the 50s then I should be confident that we will come out of a second Bush term ok. I can't speak for you, but I don't believe that for a minute.

41. Eisenhower let the fascists run the show: The Dulles Brothers |
|
were head of the CIA and Secretary of State under Eisenhower and THEY had actually backed Hitler (in connivance with the Bushes) during WWII/
Eisenhower KNEW as he was departing how f*cked up things were and made his famous speech about the military industrial complex. HE was decent but he was put in place by fascists for fascists and things got MUCH worse because he was naive and a pawn of the extreme fascist right posing as Republicans.
He DID let THEM wreck the country on his watch.

I said the speech was like cyanide-laced cotton candy--all sugar, no substance and deadly if you buy it. If most of America believes it and ingests it, we're dead. Though it appeared to be a good, sincere speech on the surface, it was the exact opposite of what it appeared. I'm glad many people are saying, 'No thanks'.

were very flawed. Both overweighted Republican voters. Real Bush bounce, if he got one at all, was more in the range of +3%. As Kerry starts to fight back, race should pull even again within a week or two.

Maybe this election means so much to each one of us that the stress level causes different reactions.
Some just say,"It'll be fine. just relax!"
Others may say, "Oh my God! This sky can not fall, it will be the end for us, our children and our grandchildren. Where is the beautiful America that I once knew?
All of us are compassionate, accept for the visiting freepers. We all have our eye on the prize - Kerry, Edwards 04.

Remember after the Democratic National Convention, all the newshounds told us not to trust any poll before the Monday after the Convention? Why don't the same talking heads say the same thing about these polls? Instead, this time we were innundated with polls the DAY AFTER the Convention - they were still cleaning up the floors of MSG - without a single hint that they might not be credible.
