CNN and Fox's Dueling Numbers
CNN and Fox's Dueling Numbers

If cable news channels were wristwatches, CNN would be Rolex and Fox News Channel would be Timex, CNN chief Jim Walton explained to critics at Summer TV Press Tour 2003 here today.

Timex sells more watches, but Rolexes cost more.

But Fox News Channel claims it is Rolex and that CNN is "more like an antique hourglass."

Fox is watched by more people on average, Walton acknowledged, but CNN's audience is more affluent, and the network can therefore charge a higher ad rate. It enjoys a 40 percent CPM (cost per thousand people) advantage over FNC, CNN claims.

"Rolex means something to people," Walton said. "I really don't think Rolex cares about how many watches Timex sells," he added.

Much spewing of numbers was done by folks at the two news channels today, after reporters asked CNN to back up its claim of Rolex-ness and then called FNC suits for comment.

2. CNN Rolex - Fox Rolex wanna be
They can claim Rolex status all they want but the folk that buy them are just looking for a leader in the "think" department. They are lazy.

3. If unbiased, objective cable news channels were wristwatches ..
.. CNN etc. can label themselves anything they want, they still appear as cheap China-style knockoffs, desperately trying to look like the real deal.

8. I think the "whore" analogy works well
Fox is part of the in-house stable

CNN freelances, but is available anytime, day or night, on-call.

10. The " rolex " comment illustrates such a snotty attitude
that the CNN decline is much more easily understood. Contempt for your audience is perceived and responded to with the remote control.

Sort of like when some disparage middle America as fly over country or sheeple. Hard to persuade someone of your point of view when they only see a sneer on your lips.

11. One advantage of lower cost
Is that Faux can be offered as part of a basic cable package. For those folks who can't afford expanded digital cable packages (the poor, elderly on fixed incomes like my mom), they get stuck with Faux.
