Giant Defense Contractor To Offer Partner Benefits

The US military may not want gays and lesbians, but the company that makes much of its hardware does. Northrop Grumman Corp, one of the largest defense contractors in the world has decided to offer health insurance and other spousal benefits to the partners of its gay and lesbian workers.

In a statement the company said that over the past decade it had acquired a number of smaller firms some of which already had domestic partner plans and now has decided to harmonize the various benefits into one company-wide package.

"We wanted to bring greater consistency to programs across the company," said company spokesperson Gus Gulmert. "We applied that as 'best practice' across the company."
