Arms-Grade Uranium Reported at Iran Plant
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&ncid=716&e=2&u=/ap/20030826/ap_on_re_mi_ea/nuclear_agency_iran

VIENNA, Austria - U.N. inspectors have found traces of highly enriched, weapons-grade uranium at an Iranian nuclear facility, a senior diplomat said Tuesday, citing a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The find heightened concerns that Tehran may be running a secret nuclear weapons program.

Agency inspectors found "particles" of highly enriched uranium that could be used in a weapons program at the facility at Natanz, said the diplomat, who covers the activities of the U.N. nuclear watchdog and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The United States has accused Iran of developing a clandestine nuclear weapons program, violating the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty barring the spread of atomic weapons.

1. Don't pay any attention to Iraq.
Everything is fine in Iraq.
Don't think about North Korea either.
Everything is fine there too.

8. I'd rather Israel have nukes..
Than the religious extremists running Iran. Deterrence doesn't work with religious extremists who think suicide sends them to God. Which nation with nukes threatens us more?

11. in broad destablization terms?

Israel without a doubt.

An Iranian nuke would actually bring a certain amount of stability to the region vs. the military hegemony of Israel vs. everyone else.

on edit: As long as we are worrying about Fundamentalist Armagedon type politics I'd suggest Israel Shahak's Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel and a long, hard look at the story of Samson.

14. the Jewish religious nuts don't govern Israel...
The Likud is pretty secular. As far as Israel hegemony, give me a break if Israel was so imperialistic it could easily take over Syria and Jordan.

highest birthrate out there is among the very religious and the secular actually have a negative population growth through emmigration. Likud also rules only through powersharing with Shas.

on edit: They already tried Lebanon and it took them two decades to quit trying and get back to trying to keep the West Bank and Gaza under their thumb.

18. doubtfully...
The Orthodox parties aren't popular at all. The clerics in Iran weren't even elected. Israelis can vote Sharon out of office unlike in Iran.

17. an Iranian nuke certainly wouldn't breed stability..
But Israeli military strength is what prevented Saddam from having a nuclear reactor in 81. It amazes me that you supposed anti-nuclear peace activists sure don't mind theocratic Islamists developing nukes as long as it'll weaken the US and Israel.

22. I'm not anti-nuclear
as a matter of fact I think the IMF should be required to fund a nuke for every country on the globe as it seems to be the only thing to keep other countries from screwing around in your affairs.

19. I guess it works with extremists who think slaughtering Arabs gets
them to God? Israel is a treacerous nation. They have stolen nuclear material from the US, sold weapons secretes to S. Aftica, sent weapons to Iran when the US was fighting Iran using Iraq, bombed one of our ships (the Liberty) killing our men, exploding bombs and killing people and blaming it on Arabs. It's a nation founded on deceit. How can we in good conscience support such a nation. Were it not for the money and influence of the Zionist in America we would be at war with such a nation, not sending tax dollars and spending the lives of our children for their interests.

21. you're right of course..
Every problem the world faces can be blamed on Israel. Man, you list almost every myth Hamas says about Israel. You're too silly to debate. Israel has done shitty things but so do most nations who are surrounded by people intent on destroying them. The USS Liberty was ruled an accident by everyone who investigated it.

10. Why? Think we should invade?
We won't. They have no oil. No minerals. Nothing of value except what they wrested with sweat from the desert.

But you keep trying.

13. They have lots of oil
But they also have a land mass two or three times the size of iraq and they haven't been under constant bombing for 10 years.

We won't invade Iran not because they don't have anything they want (they do), but because even Bushco should be able to realize that with all of our troops commited to Iraq (and most of them need to stay that to keep the uprisings down) we simply do not have enough troops to invade and occupy Iran.

I would say that surgical strikes are a much bigger possibility. But with so many of our troops just across the border, I feel that surgical strikes would most likely make Iran take a much more active role in the Iraqi resistance.

23. Condoleeza Rice solves "African Uranium" mystery!
"The text of the SOTU actually said Iran, but the President thought it said Iraq. He was only one letter off," said National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice. "What is one letter against 16 words? This should lay the the matter to rest for all fair minded patriotic Americans."
