<snip>

LONDON - Iraq (news - web sites)'s interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi said Sunday that elections would go ahead as scheduled in January despite unrelenting violence and said trials of ousted leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and his lieutenants would likely begin in October.

<snip>

Last week, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) warned that there could not be "credible elections if the security conditions continue as they are now." Voting is scheduled to take place Jan. 31.

But Allawi told reporters in London on Sunday that "we definitely are going to stick to the timetable of the elections in January next year.

"We are doing our best to ensure that we will meet the time of the elections," he said. "We are adamant that democracy is going to prevail, is going to win in Iraq."

2. They can certainly..........................
attempt to do so. The elections are doomed to fail, but I guess they have that same "resolve" thing that our glorious leader has and won't budge from a decision that has no prospect of success.

4. BS
They haven't started registering voters yet!!!

How can they hold elections in 4 montns? Someone should ask the PM this question. Can you register 20 or so million people in 3 1/2 months?

I am sure after the USA elections are over they will decide to postpone the elections.

5. Funny I heard on C-Span this AM the exact opposite
Pedro read from a newspaper, I don't recall which one, that elections in Iraq would be impossible in three major areas. One being the Sunni Triangle. I think the others would have to be other Islamic centers. They know beyond a shadow of a doubt that if they let the people vote that an Islamic Government would be put into place. They will either not allow elections or else only allow them in "safe" areas. People in America have become so very ignorant it is truly frightening.

7. An interesting contradiction:
The Regime swears that no amount of terra/resistance/insurgency will disrupt the Iraqi elections, yet it squawks about a possible delay of the US elections should Terrists attack--or seem to.

Which face does one listen to?

:freak:

8. The only thing Iraqis have in common is religion...
therefore to bring peace to Iraq, only the head religious leader must take charge of the country. For bush to think that the Iraqis place government and our laughable democracy above religion...well george again, must be smoking crap.

PS: Headlines News Today: Russia giving democracy the boot. But bush saw into Putin's soul and found him to be a 'good man, so bush devided his four years in office into: 1) Iraq, 2) personal vacations.

Good Job Great Leader Bush.
