Yudhoyono leads Indonesian vote
Early results from Indonesia's first direct presidential election suggested incumbent Megawati Sukarnoputri was set to lose office.

Retired army general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono looked on course to win, after a peaceful and orderly election.

With about 2.5m of the 147m eligible votes counted, Mr Yudhoyono had 58% compared to Mrs Megawati's 42%.

Results are set to trickle in over the coming days, although the winner will not officially be known until October.

1. Susilo course for Indonesian election win: survey
JAKARTA (AFP): Former general Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was on course to win a landslide victory in Indonesia's presidential election Monday, according to a nationwide sample of votes by a respected independent survey group.

Susilo was predicted to win 62 percent of the votes against 38 percent for incumbent Megawati Soekarnoputri, said the Freedom Institute, an Indonesian partner of the Washington-based National Democratic Institute (NDI).

Although the survey was only a partial result of a full study to be released later Monday, Freedom Institute director Rizal Mallarangeng said the final outcome was unlikely to differ significantly.

"But after we have a more representative results from central Java, we may see the result slightly change to around 61-60 percent and Megawati to 39-40 percent," Mallarangeng said on Metro TV.
