2 U.S. Soldiers Killed in Afghan Battle

KABUL, Afghanistan - Two U.S. soldiers were killed in a firefight with insurgents Monday, while an Afghan vice president escaped a bomb attack on his convoy in the latest assassination attempt on a political leader ahead of key elections.

The U.S. military said leaders of al-Qaida and the Taliban have held a series of meetings in Pakistan to discuss how to disrupt the elections. U.S. and Afghan officials have been warning of increased violence before the Oct. 9 presidential vote.

Monday's violence followed a failed assassination attempt last week on U.S.-backed interim President Hamid Karzai, considered the favorite to win the election.

The Americans were killed in a clash with militants in the troubled southeastern province of Paktika, the military said. The dead were not immediately identified.

2. I posted this over in GD and no one seems
to be interested in this story or the 3 afghan soldiers that were begeaded yesterday by the taliban. Afghanistan...the forgotten war.

3. The attempt on Karzai's life didn't get much response either.

Emotional battle fatigue, I think, people get worn out worrying
about Iraq and whomever these imbeciles will decide to invade
next.

4. I'm interested
I keep mentioning, I guess in most of my posts that my daughter is over there. Every news that comes out of there I pay attention to. By the way, she told me that Afgahnistan is the most landmine infested country in the world. Knows a soldier who had his face blown off by one. Sick times we live in.
